I haven't seen a campaign go by lately without one or two people taking Extend Spell, and personally I wouldn't build a sorcerer without taking Empower Spell.

That said, discussion boards are a very, very (very) poor method of gathering customer satisfaction data. I'd caution strongly against drawing any conclusions about actual play patterns based on this sort of information.

Y'know, these problems about hit die type could easily be solved if monsters were built in something like, say, an up-to-date and accurate version of e-Tools!

As for the 3.0 mummies in scenarios, that's not such a big problem; rare is the scenario that doesn't contain stat blocks. In those cases, use the mummies that came with the scenario. No real reason there can't be various mummy toughnesses floating around.
