[3.P] Shadow Walk or similar

I need a spell that will allow one character to hide in the shadow of another character. By hide I don't mean using stealth, but using the shadow as a sorta mini-pocket plane or something like that, so that the hiding character is physically not present.
I figured Shadow Walk is kinda what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure of a few things.
Firstly - the character using Shadow Walk is simply "plane shifting" to the Plane of Shadows, so I assume he can still be detected and attacked by the planes denizens?
Secondly - can the character be detected from the Material Plane? I'm iffy on how the Plane of Shadows works, IIRC there was something about it being similar to etherealness?

Does anyone know a better spell (or ability) for doing that? It's important that the hiding character can see what is going on outside of the shadow. The ability to breath in there would be appreciated but not required.

Rope trick but with cloaks instead. Increase the level to compensate for it being mobile.

I kinda think you are, actually- I'm pretty familiar with most of the spells in most of the 3.x official products, and what you are talking about doesn't exist to the best of my knowledge.

OTOH if you can avoid needing to breathe, you can always try to slip into a portable hole that you somehow get the guy you want to shadow to carry.

Well, shadow walk won't do the trick- it's for quick travel, not for lurking/spying.

Will just plain invisibility do the trick for you?

Turn ethereal. That'll take you off-plane but you can still see what's on the Prime Material.

What level are you looking for? There may be a reason such a spell doesn't exist; it sounds like it would be overpowered.

Any level. And it's not really overpowered. There are more powerful spells than this. All it does is enable you to follow someone practically anywhere without being noticed. That is all I want.
