3e to 4e. Whaddaya got to gain? Whaddaya got to lose?

I think it all depends on the DM and how much work and development has been spent on a custom game world. If a group is ready for a fresh start in a new campaign, set in a new world then 4E just means spending some cash and the campaign is up and running.

If the DM and the players really love the game world as it currently exists along with all the options they currently have then 4E may be overly restrictive to them. Converting an existing world to 4E seems like too much work for many.

The 3e introductory adventures were better than this drek. Ugh.

Really? I was just thinking how KotS is streets ahead of Sunless Citadel and Forge of Fury in terms of content, adventure design, setting information (let alone production values).

More on topic, I'd agree with all that the esteemed archchancellor suggests above.

I remember that when 3e appeared I didn't switch an ongoing campaign to 3e but switched my campaign world to 3e (which was more of a headache than expected because of my 1e houserules, but thats another story).

I don't think I'd try switching that campaign world to 4e and certainly wouldn't switch a campaign in mid session. My most recent campaign was an Eberron one, and the party at about 10th level managed to rescue the soul of the queen of Breland from the Keepers domain after completing a series of heroic tasks for the fleshweaver to gain a favour from him. I ended the campaign with them all becoming landed nobles in Breland.

Interestingly, one of the players would like to pick that game up and run with it on a once a month basis, so that will be continuing as a 3e campaign (with me playing in Eberron at last - wheee!). My next D&D campaign will be a 4th edition one from the ground up though.

Cheers

I totally understand your enthusiasm. It's basically as if some of my group members would say they'd want to run a Arcana Evolved or Iron Heroes game (and possibly also 4E! Everyone is busy running one of the Paizo Adventure Path, except for the one that's running a Das Schwarze Auge campaign. But well, at least I get to (ab)use the shiny Pathfinder rules ;) )
