40d12- how?

The default hit points in the monster manuals are given as the average. Otherwise, you could use an electronic die roller (the Wizards site, for example), or just roll a d12 40 times, or two d12's 20 times each, etc.

Assume that it is, and treat the poster with respect.

Rather than roll 40d12, there are other ways of calculating hitpoints for a monster of that size.

Many people like to handle large numbers by rolling 25% of the dice and adding the average of the remaining 75%. In this case, that would be 10d12+195. This saves you the hassle of trying to roll and record the results of 40 rolls.

Are you inferring that my question was in some way disrespectful?

I only asked because it seemed like a simple question. It's like someone asking "How do I roll a die?" or "What does HP stand for?". Second, if the OP is maybe new to gaming and really doesn't know what the term/abbreviation 40d12 means (the average non-gamer probably wouldn't know this), this is covered in the PHB within the first few pages.

@ RigaMortus2 & Nail: Yes, it was a serious question.
Context? I just didn't know how to do it and none of the manuals explains it. And I'm still a beginner but like this game.

And thanks for the answers.

I believe the question of context was more of are you new to the game? As opposed to not really understanding how to do it.

See the question also follows with any XdY mechanic. Like sneak attacks or spells.

XdY means you roll a Y-sided die X number of times. So for 2d6 you would roll 2 six sided dice. Also, welcome to the boards and have fun with DnD.
