40d12- how?

XdY means you roll a Y-sided die X number of times. So for 2d6 you would roll 2 six sided dice. Also, welcome to the boards and have fun with DnD.

What he said.

Oh and pg 5 of the PHB explains that too.

So start there and then pg 6 (for character creation).

{I swear I'm giving this same advice a lot lately. Same group?}

Oh and a Great Wyrm is far too complex a creature for a beginner to attempt to learn the game with. Heck they are too complex for old hands a lot of the time.

Stay with the 1 HD things for a while until you start to get the mechanics down.

12 + (39 x 6.5) + 40 x Con Mod. Or if this dragon is truely exceptional (as perhaps all great wyrms should be!) (40 x 12) + (40 x Con Mod).

@ RigaMortus2 & Nail: Yes, it was a serious question.
Context? I just didn't know how to do it and none of the manuals explains it. And I'm still a beginner but like this game.

And thanks for the answers.

Ok, np...

But this can easily be answered by reading page 5 of the PHB. Under the DICE section. I recommend all players (including the DM, if you are the DM) read the PHB to understand the basic of the rules. You will find on page 5 what the abbreviations for the dice mean. d12 refers to a die with 12 sides. The number before the letter 'd' (in your case 40) tells you how many times to roll this die. So you roll the twelve sided die 40 times to get your hit points. From there, it's no stretch to realize if you roll two twelve sided die at a time, it will cut your rolling down in half.

Anyway, this is all within the first 5 pages of the PHB, which all players and DMs should read...

The other part of this, I can't fault you, because it is hard to miss especially if you are new. All the creatures in the MM have a listed hit die (your 40d12 for example) as well as a listed hit point total. This hit point total is equal to half of the max they could get when rolling for hit points. So if you know that the max hit points you could roll for your dragon is 480 (rolling a 12 on the d12 40 times in a row; or 40x12), you would take half of this for it's hit points, so 240. That is the quick and easy way to do it, and the way MOST DMs do hit points. Not to confuse the issue, but after you get this number, you would then added bonus HPs from his Con (Con modifider x hit dice, in this case 40).
