D&D 4E 4e and Charcter rerolling, retrianing etc

4e is going to stir up how classes play so its only reasonable to assume that many people could find themsleves a month or two into a campaign and realise they're playing a charcter they really dont want to play.

Does 4e have a new way of tackling this or is the good old , Your charcter dies in a blaze or glory, before his ashes have cooled you find a new charcter has joined the party oddly enough at the exact same level as the charcter who just died. how convenient.

Long term this really isnt an issue since once everyone gets a feel for it you kinda know how classes you havent even played will play out.

But in the inital stages is 4e any different and if not how are you DM's going to be handeling such things ?

Given how popular the retraining rules were from phb2, I'm guessing they'll have some kind of retraining rules. However, because Mike Mearls says, "all multiclassing works", then there really won't be a need to retrain, in my opinion.

I'm hoping to restart the campaign from 1st level. I'm hoping that the "multi-classing now works" comment holds true and my players will create, shape, and discover the characters all over again.

I may consider attempting to "upconvert" my group's existing PCs to their current levels but I want to read the 4E PHB and consider this carefully. With what I've seen so far, I think it will help the transition to 4E to have everyone start at the beginning.

Any reasonable GM will let you redo a character. If it's the same level (or point value, or XP, whatever) then there shouldn't be an issue.
Yeah, my group's been doing this for years. As long as the concept is still intact, I don't have a problem with how the mechanical representation of it is achieved.

Per Morrus' 4E info page, "There will be rules akin to the retraining rules in PHBII - they don't like the idea of people planning their careers from level 1 to 30." I believe this was mentioned in a Podcast.

but then some of us enjoy that part of character creation and will continue doing it no matter what the edition or even game system.

Same way I always do: if at any point the player wants to retire his character, he is free to do so. His new character comes in at the same XP total, with equipment as per the Wealth-per-Level guidelines.

(If the PC dies, then the new character comes in as though Raised - one level down. At high levels, the player can opt to take a hit in starting equipment equal to the cost of a True Res, and start at the same XP total as the rest of the group. One or both of these may change with 4e, if I move across at all.)
