D&D 4E 4e Classes

With the split into arcane, divine and martial power sources I was thinking three classes based on each source.

Maybe something like...

Arcane: Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
Divine: Cleric, Druid, Paladin
Martial: Fighter, Ranger, Rogue

Don't forget the Warlord, James Wyatt practically confirmed it on the YouTube interview.

He apparently saw my post here (which was just posting the image I found on the WotC forums) and was joking about it appearing before they were prepared to discuss it.

Tha'’s what I was hoping, but as of now, we know that the paladin, rogue and ranger are still in.

My hopes are that they only have 4 classes.
Thief
Warrior
Wizard
Cleric

I hope they always have only 4 classes and do something different and innovative like a tree system or, do away with classes and use "feats" to power up particular classes. This will give players more of a say so i how their characters develop as opposed to the multiclassed character.

I was (ideally) wanting 3, but sure, I can understand the appeal of 4.

It is practically a given that Talent Tress (a la d20 Modern / Grim Tales / Postmodern: Fantastic Classes / Star Wars Saga Edition) will be a key part of 4e.

But I'm not yet 100% sure.

I'd like to see the Druid go. After all, it's simply a cleric with the Plant and Animal domains and the granted power of shapechanging.

I'd like to see the Monk merged with the Ranger or Fighter - more a Disciplined Warrior than a martial artist. The mind-over-matter abilities can be removed to a psionic character class.

I'd like to see the Paladin as a prestige class along the lines of Divine Crusader, perhaps with the Glory and Good domains.

And I'd like to see this thread moved to the 4E forum. :)

So far, the paladin is still in, but they can champion any alignment (which will now have no mechanical affect on play) except for N.

I'm practically sure that, if there is a sorcerer in 4e, it will be a lot more like the warlock than anything else. The designers actually went out and said that the only reason a sorcerer was included in 3e was to have someone else use the last third of the book. I think the whole spontaneous vs prepared thing is going away.

As for the monk, almost every ability, ther than speed and flurry, was already available to the fighter in a toned down version. The whole first six levels were almost exclusively bonus feats. I think that with all of the talk about weapon choice mattering a whole lot, most of the old monk abilities are going to be rolled into a fighter talent tree.
