D&D 4E 4e Feats and Powers Spreadsheet

GoodKingJayIII

First Post
I've started putting together a spreadsheet which will eventually hold all the Powers for all the classes, with the idea that one could sort and filter Powers by Source (Arcane, Divine, Martial), Class, Level, Keywords and more in order to quickly look up Power choices, get a general idea of what they do, and make decisions for characters. I have a mind to do this for feats as well. Before I complete this project, I have two questions for all of you.

1) Would this be useful? We have a lot of excellent Excel-based character sheets out there. I'm just wondering if it makes sense to create something like this given that these sheets might have this functionality and more.

2) Is this legal to distribute freely? I'm simply not familiar with the GSL and since we do not have an SRD of sorts, I don't care to infringe on any kind of copyright.

Thanks everyone!

I would love it if you did this! I have started the same thing with powers, but with my other projects and family responsibilities, I haven't gotten very far.

Most of the spreadsheet character sheet/character builders don't have this sort of detailed information. I was planning to take the best of these sheets/character builders and modify it with a spreadsheet with all the powers and feats, with some sort of database expandability added on. I have been modifying a great sheet to allow expanding/modifying of the class/race/paragon path/epic destiny databases. It would be great to have a database for powers and feats to add to this.

If you don't do this or it is illegal, I will just do it for myself anyway. It would just be nice to get the database without doing it myself. It would also be nice if WotC would put out a pdf version of the rules so I could just cut and paste all the info. Much less work.

I'll post an example of what it would look like tonight. I have a lot of the cleric powers done.

I'm mainly concerned about the legality because I do not think I can post Power descriptions whole sale or as comprehensive summaries. At the worst, it's a potentially useful tool for sorting through tons of Powers (growing more useful as more books are released). At best, it would list every effect a power could offer, all sortable and filerable. But that may not be appropriate under the new GSL

good idea!

here's a feat spreadsheet.

if someone has something similar for powers, that would be great!

I do not have any illegal pdfs, just the books, but I want to build my characters with my computer...

I still am, but I've gotten kinda delayed with the project. At first I didn't think anyone was interested, and just last week my g/f broke her knee so she's need a lot of assistance.

I'll try and get back on this over the weekend. I'll make some more headway and post what I have.

That would be awesome. With a job and 2 kids I don't get anywhere.
I'd like to contribute more, but I guess I won't achieve more than that feat list.

Well, no. Honestly it would still be useful to some extent, but CB has pretty well replaced the unofficial character sheets for most people. There aren't that many people with both the time and energy to do this stuff that also don't have DDI.

On top of that its pretty hard to argue that any kind of database containing all the descriptions etc of every power is legal to distribute. You could probably get away with a summary, but how useful would that really be? It wouldn't give you as much functionality as CB and the Compendium have for everyday use and its really just too much work to do for little gain to most people. It would be handy for say generating maptool macros or such, but again you wouldn't be able to distribute them legally and only a small fraction of people play online.
