I concur. The Combat Challenge ability leaves out the phrase Opportunity Attack, so I don't believe that it enables one.

On another note, 4e encounters can, indeed, be brutal, particularly when there's a significant brute in play, like this Bugbear. That high AC makes him far more dangerous than multiple weaker opponents would have been, simply because we can't hit him.

Of course, if I hadn't foregone the opportunity to coup-d'etat that goblin, Pier wouldn't be unconcious, and I'd be able to test his Reflex defense instead.

Mid, I was definitely thinking of having Vatan slit the sleeper's throat as he went to attack the bugbear, but decided against it as it would have burned an action point and wanted to save it for the biggy here, and also thinking along the lines of prisoner. So if you want you can blame me ;)
 

It's hard to say. In my experience, 4e encounters tend to skew difficult. Dropping PC's is fairly frequent, and is mitigated by the very liberal rules on healing. This is especially true at low levels...1 through 5.

As you go up levels, monsters start doing less damage proportionally to PC hit points. Their difficulty increases come from increases in monster HP and attack bonuses.

That is to say a level 10 monster doesn't do a LOT more damage per attack than a level 5 monster. But they have a lot more hit points, and much higher attack bonuses. And defenses, of course.

But at level one? Characters are dang fragile, especially if the GM rolls lucky. One or two good hits bloodies. Another couple puts you down. Ideally someone has healing left. If not?

Hope the others can stop the encounter in time to save your buttocks with a Heal check.

That's pretty much where I am. I have no idea how much healin' we have, if any.

Sigh. It's hard to be 1st level. No matter what edition you're playing.

Hmm... maybe that's why I love low-level games so much. But, in my defense, I have rarely killed players in any of my games (at least ones that were actively playing). Honestly, I can only think of one.

It's always funny to me how GM's and players fall so reliably into opposite camps.

GM's like low level games because "it's easy to challenge the PC's."

Players, when they do, like low level games generally because they like to build their legend, starting small and getting big.

In other words, GM's like low level because the PCs have less ability to overcome obstacles.

Players like low level because they like to overcome obstacles.

Weird.

I burned ALL my healing already.

One on Druthruss, one on Jude, I believe, and I missed my Healing strike(if I got the healing anyway, it was on me).

I think my daily might help a tad, but I don't think it heals directly.
