Yeah, but just in principle, Gods slugging out with a group of mortals just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Demi-gods... maybe, but anything higher than that should simply be out of their league.

You should look into the Celtic cycle of myths (Irish, IIRC). They have a cycle sort of like the traditional Greek-Roman myths where the young gods defeat and take over from the elder gods. Then they evolve past that where the heroes end up defeating the gods and taking over the rule.

You might not like it, but it has some very cool, and very gameable, stories.
