I'm just starting to look at 4E from the Players & GMs standpoint. 3E introduced some converted creatures from older editions and a bunch of new ones. I'm curious to know the ration of new to updated creatures in the 4E MM.

That depends a lot on whether "Cyclops Storm Shaman" and "Cyclops" are different creatures. There are very few completely new creatures in the 4E Monster Manual (less than 10% as a rough estimate), but lots of variations of creatures from earlier editions that have never appeared with quite the same name or characteristics.

Yeah, many new variants, but I don't recall any completely new critters ottomh.

Edit: Though there are also many so altered that they might as well be new monsters (archons, angels, eladrin- hmm, it's all the old "good outsider" names!), so if you count them, there are a few.

I think these are all completely new, but it is possible that some a renamed critters from earlier sources. Also several of these "new" creatures were previewed in the Dungeons of Dread minis set, so their MM appearance isn't technically their first.

the coolest thing that I noticed about the MM was that it had things like the Berbalang and Quickling in it - who would have expected that? :)

Abomination, Blood Fiend
Bat, Shadowhunter
Beetle, Tangler
Demon, Immolith
Foulspawn
Larva Mage (this is probably a renamed Worm that Walks)
Rot Harbinger
Sorrowsworn
Spider, Blade
Spider, Bloodweb Swarm
Swordwing
Treant, Blackroot

At the least, the above were in 3e.

I've found the Blood Fiend in the Fiend Folio and the Sorrowsworn Demon in the MMIII, but I can't find any of the others in any 3e source. Where are you seeing them? Did they appear under other names perhaps?

The Rot Harbinger is the Angel of Decay from Libris Mortis. The Foulspawn are the Ushemoi from MM5, the Swordwing is very similiar to the Vivisector (though much, much tougher) from MM5, the Blade Spider is the Sword Spider from Monsters of Faerun, the Larva Mage is definitely a renamed Worm that Walks.

I thought that Immolith demon was based on a Dreamblade mini; I don't remember it in 4e, unless it appeared on the WoTC website.
