D&D 4E 4E Playtesting

This is the same technique that the NSA and CIA uses for counter-espionage to find moles.

Of course, they could sue those playtesters for breach, but would never win-- because:

1. There is no proof that it was them who drove out to an internet cafe in some major US city and posted the information annonymously to a wiki. For all wotc knows it could be net-trolls lucky guess. All they have is the circumstantial evidence.

2. Even if they could prove that the group did it-- they could NEVER prove which member of the group did the posting. Since all but 1 member of the group is innocent, all would have to be let off the hook. Innocent before being proven guilty and all that...
I think you'll find that every group has a key member who basically accepts responsibility for all of this. The buck stops with him/her as part of the NDA.

Whether you get caught or not, whether I want the info or not, it's still wrong to violate the NDA. If you signed the NDA, you should abide by its terms. And we should not be asking anyone not to abide by its terms.

We should be asking WotC for some real information. The buck stops at WotC, not some poor playtester(s).

since the NDA makes playtesters say that they are not....

How do you know that? You must a playtester!

Yep... When I found out my buddy was playtesting, all I asked him was, "Is there anything you CAN tell me?"

The answer was, "No, but I think you'll like it."

I left it at that.

I think that to expect anything concrete to come out of the playtesters is pretty unlikely at this stage - after all, we're still SEVEN months away from it being released!

And I'm happy with the slow trickle of information. It indicates to me that WotC are still reviewing and revising everything. Once the rules are a little more 'set in stone' then I expect we'll start to hear a little more. Following on from other posts in this thread I'm guessing that January/February is a likely date for that.

Calm down all - we'll get our scoops and previews in due time! :)

When I first posted about playtesting 4E, I was never looking for hard facts or for them to break the NDA. I was looking for some people outside of WoTC employees to talk about their characters , and to tell the stories of what they are doing in the campaign. I would think that there is some RPGA guys out there who are responsible enough to talk about what they are doing, with out giving away real info. =)

Actually, I'd bet that all members of the group are required to sign NDAs, with possibly a clause that states new members of a group would also need to sign an NDA before being allowed to see the rules.

I know for a fact that all group members sign a NDA. It was standard practice in 3e, and I saw a reference to it for 4e.

That's standard for most RPG companies, as far as I can tell. Whoever sees the material signs an NDA.
