D&D 4E 4E respawning?

Right.

The point of "once per day, when you die" isn't that you're expected to die once per day.

It's that you're expected to avoid dying twice per day.

Heh, sorta hope paladins get something like this -- would be a good RP hook for my future Paladin of the Raven Queen (who will have becoming her consort his goal).

Scene: Raven Queen's Castle --

RQ: My, you're back again. Weren't you here just yesterday?

Pal: The minions of Orcus are a feisty lot, my dark Lady, but rest assured my companions and I shall stand victorious!

RQ: Well, then, shouldn't you be back there helping them or something?

Pal: My body fights on, my Lady, thanks to your Gifts -- why should my spirit not sojourn briefly here until the time comes for me to return to my mortal shell?
But, perhaps my Lady is right. I shall go and provide you with another victory over that demon-spawned horde!

RQ: That's a good idea. You do that.

[paladin returns to life]

[RQ sighs and walks to an astral mirror]

RQ: Hey, Lolth, you busy right now?

Lolth: Oooh, finally interested in my offer to teach you to be a really evil goddess?

RQ: No, no, it's not that....

Lolth: Oh, Me. That crazy stalker dude again? I told you not to give him any power.

RQ: I know, I know. But Orcus has been beating on the door again, what else should I have done? I mean, comparatively speaking, Orcus is worse after all....

Lolth: Well, hmmm. I have an idea -- give him a really hard quest and tell him that it's the only way to prove he's worthy of you....

RQ: Been thinking about that a bit myself. My only worry is.... what if he succeeds?

Lolth: Damn. Sucks to be you then, girl. Well, look, I gotta run. Got a knock-down-drag-out fight scheduled with Corellon and I hate to be late.

RQ: ....

Several comments:

2. High-level characters in 3.x had insanely high saving throws (I think the party cleric had Will +40 or thereabout at 20th level, party rogue had Ref +40, and so on... I don't think anyone had less than +20 on any single save)
3. Because of (2) above, I rarely used save or die spells past 15th level, because when I did use them, they were a waste of actions. There were so many spells that were so much more worthwhile...

I'm actually curious how that one came to be, actually. A good save gets you +12 at 20th level, +5 for appropriate magic items. Assuming an initial 18, all 5 points going into the ability, a +2 racial bonus, +6 enchantment bonus, and +5 from the Tome/etc., you'll have an ability score of 36 in your best ability score. So with the feat and that +13 bonus, I can see a +32 so far. How do you get the rest? Or how did you boost the low saves, which start at +6, +11 with the appropriate magic items, to a +20?

Then you chose a particularly bad way of wording it.

"I wish 4e had gotten rid of 3e's revolving door of death." = acceptable
"I wish 4e had not added WoWish respawning." = not acceptable

Not acceptable to who? Sounds fine to me either way you type it...

The other noticeable difference is between self-rezzing, like the archmage ability and like how MMOs do it VS. having your allies rezz you, which is who previous editions did it, and I am sure 4E will have this as well, but the archmage can now self-rez (ie respawn) or at least has the chance to, and I am sure other classes will have something similiar.

I honestly don't remember exactly. I know that a lot of multiclassing was involved, I know that the cleric has three classes that granted good Will saves, so he had a base save greater than +12 (let's say he had 6 levels in 2 classes and 8 in the third, that would give him +5+5+6, for a total of +16, with a cloak of resistance +5 for +21, his Wisdom was 30 for +31, and there were miscellaneous luck, insight, morale, and sacred bonuses involved, IIRC).

As for the low saves, they had +6 to begin with, at least +4 from the appropriate ability (everybody had at least 18 in everything by level 20), +5 from the resistance item, and another +5 from the aforementioned miscellaneous bonuses. Easy.

...Huh? MMO rezzing ISNT really like this. It's typically one of two types.
The old fashioned way...someone casts a Rez spell of some sort, exactly like DnD.

Corpse Running. You respawn at some distant area and need to run back to your body to get your gear/rez. Usually a hefty penalty of some sort with this version, which is why most groups prefer someone with an actual Rez.

Self rezzing as per the spell in the excerpt? VERY rare. It's not a common occurence at all.
