D&D 4E 4E "Return to" adventures

With Lolth's new importance to the default pantheon, surely we're going to see some sort of Demonweb Pits redux?
Second adventure in the Paragon path (forget the name) is all about our favorite spider goddess and her spindly pit. :)

Has there been an official expedition to the Isle of Dread in 3.5?? Or are you thinking Savage Tide?

also, does anyone have the link where all the covers for the products for 2008 are posted? That's where I got the info about the P2 adventure.

Well, not so much. That's what I was talking about before. The theories behind 4E encounter design are very different. Many--perhaps even most--of the maps would need to be at least altered, and a few redesigned from scratch.

I realize this... I was going for humor ;) But, yes, you are right. Encounter design is a little different, and dungeons will have to incorporate that kind of change (except maybe ToEE, where there are lots of multi-monster encounters).

I expect we'll see another Ravenloft at some point, probably late in 4e, since it exists in all previous editions. I also expect we'll see a number of "Return to..." adventures. I think I'd quite like "Return to Castle Amber" and/or "Return to the Gates of Firestorm".

However, I'm really not sure about the whole "Return to..." concept. Having never played the originals, the nostalgia is wasted on me. And, frankly, "Expedition to the Demonweb Pits" and even "Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk" were disappointing, IMO. I think I would prefer to see all-new adventures instead (The "Barrow of the Forgotten King"/"Sinister Spire"/"Fortress of the Yuan-ti" trilogy was excellent, again IMO).

Early in 3E, we got to return to the Temple of Elemental Evil.

3.5 gave us a return to Castle Ravenloft, Castle Greyhawk, and the Isle of Dread among other iconic places.

Personally, I'd love to see a revisit of a classic not yet re-envisioned, for example a return to the Desert of Desolation.
I think we will see them. They've hinted as much on several occasions. They're doing all-new adventures for their initial "taking you through each tier from levels 1 to 30" series, but once that's out of the way, I bet we'll see 4e versions of older stuff (even if they're just done online via the DDI).

I hope they develop the 'locations of note' in W&M with adventures. I'm happy they want to make a return to the old classic, but I want also new ones too.

Just do a re sort of the B1-9 combined volume. I loved the plot tree set up. I've been running a 3rd ed campaign in Mystara ad used this. They did the one with the cleric and the bell, and Rahasia. They then went their own way but hey thats life. All of that set (it includes KotBL and The Silver Princess) would be great.

I'm guessing we'll see them get developed in the initial Paragon and Epic Tier adventures ...

As for Dark Sun, I too am hoping they'll revive that setting, even if they only put out one book. I don't think it's too unreasonable to think they will, since they've said that after Eberron, they are going to revisit other old settings as well as develop new ones. Granted, some settings may only get an update on the DDI. We may not actually get any physical products for them. But that would be fine with me.

If they do create a new series of "Return to" modules, I really hope they drop the concept of these modules being a "return". I started with 3E, so I never played any of the "classic" modules, and I certainly have no intention to learn an older version of the game in order to do so. As such, for me at least, titles like "Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil" say to me that this module is only for people who have played the original, and are not for newer fans of the game like myself. At the very least, is establishes some kind of default assumption that the player knows that there even was an original Temple if Elemental Evil module.

I would prefer it if modules did more to embrace players who have never even heard of the older modules. Returning to old classics is fine, but I would prefer such an endeavor to be more in the spirit of a total remake than a sequel or mere update. Find the basic core spirit of the original and rebuild it from the beginning to embrace a newer audience and a completely changed game.

Err, sorry, but I really can't offer a suggestion beyond that.
