D&D 4E 4e Tiers & Classes - a different take

Isn't this how they used to do multiclassing back in 2nd edition and before? I kinda like it because it resembles skills. You don't get better at something just because another skill is high. You start at at level 1 in everything. Or is it zero and you start at level 1 in one class? It makes sense to me, if you can make it work.

Class levels are abstract values one needs to balance encounters. If your gamist side only focuses on D&D minis style encounters you only need levels for fighting the monsters on the dungeon tiles map. Skill ranks will be good enough for your game because a single DC check will be good enough for the low focus or complexity you will want ouside D&D minis. OTOH if you want another action roleplaying gamist experience you need to focus on rules or a system that will be covering what you want.

I would like a gaming experience that focuses on combat tactics, campaign strategy and an idea of something beyond the mundane. Intutively I thought about three types of classes that somehow link and perhaps even combine their effects together regarding the gaming experience.

It is possible to do. But you will need loads of free time and friends to help you.
