Lords of Madness is the only source for that, and it really doesn't dovetail with ANY of the other illithid lore. This was my one and only beef with Lords of Madness.

Mind Flayers = Far Realms inhabitants.

Perhaps the Far Realm is the opposite of the material/astral sea/elemental chaos, in that it is growing more orderly and less-crazy, while the normal cosmology is growing crazy.

In that sense, the mind flayers could be from a future state rather than time.
