I think I'll just skip the online stuff entirely. I'm hardly a technophobe but for the most part computers are really not necessary for D&D.

If it's $9.99/month as I've seen reported, the question becomes, it is worth $120/year to you?

We all wanted e-tools to do many of the things that this new program is supposed to do. The question is, is it worth $120/year?

The answer will probably depend upon how often you will use it.

Personally, I'm prepared to pay US$10 per month for Dragon, Dungeon, and the online enhancements of the books - the virtual game table, character creator, and all that jazz is just gravy I may or may not use.

Heck, I've been currently screwing around with Warcraft for about 15 bucks a month - and I spend 10 bucks a month on trivial purchases easily anyway. I could just drop the Warcraft account and be paying ten bucks less per month than I am now, and doing something I enjoy more anyway. :)

MerricB: For serious update on character roles (possible character classes) watch this video on YouTube. Interview with James Wyatt.

4 groups of roles...

defender (fighter, paladin)
leader (cleric, warlord)
controler (wizard, ?)
striker (rogue, ranger)

Hope, I got it right... please watch and correct it if necessary... Sounds great. Thanks James!!!

Wow, that sound great !

I guess the other controller will be sorcerer, as it has been confirmed that there are still sorcerers and wizards.

Well, really, it's quite a bit more than just the VTT for 120 bucks a year. It's a twin subscription to Dungeon and Dragon, online extras AND the VTT, with all the Dungeon adventures being VTT supported out of the box. That right there is a FANTASTIC resource. Being able to get something like an Adventure Path and use it right away in a VTT would be great.

Right now, when I run the STAP, I have to host the maps and minis on Photobucket, type in all the room descriptions and whatnot and then start to play. It's a bit time consuming really. Being able to just read and go is a major draw.

I actually wonder how long it will be before other companies start making their modules D&DI compatable, if possible. Hopefully you'll be able to buy a Goodman Games module and plunk it right into the VTT with your online group.

I'm not too concerned about the price. I can afford it.

What I am concerned about is what I'll get for it.

If it is only an online sheet and some flashy dungeon generator I can move figures in, as well as a couple of articles and tables that we used to have, I will not spend the money.

If we get quality articles that are about as good and as plenty as what we used to get in Dragon and Dungeon (or more), with new crunch and fluff, lots of good online tools (lists of the rules you own - searchable, filterable, printable, containing not only short descriptions but also full texts; character and NPC generators that can incorporate all those rules - and also houserules; generators for everything else, like town statistics, treasure, all the works), the ability to get online versions of the books (pdfs or something similar), as well as said shiny dungeon generator I can move figures around in?

If we get that, I'll gladly spend the money then!

Who's confirmed wizards and sorcerers will still be around, all I've read is the two wont be merged. Not that they will both still be there.

That said I'd guess the two casters are Wizard and Mage (a warlockish class?)

No.

The question is "How much of the tabletop game mechanics have been stripped away to make this version of e-tools work?"

C'mon people, 3.5 D&D core is NOT a complex system. Simplification isnt necessary. A massive overhaul isnt required.
Fine, fix grapple, change skills to saga, replace the FTR and Monk with ToB and add a Warlock type to the core classes and you're done.
Do that and you have a new 3.75 that doesnt reboot the entire collection of 3.5/3.5 work.

OTOH, when a company has proven, time and again, that they cant get online support to work for a system that is lacking in complexity, I'm afraid that they'll just make the system even dumber to allow online functionality.

Who actually believes that PCs need to have defined roles in any given encounter?
