Enworlders - Why so worked up about the PDF's?

I'm a DnD junkie and I don't think the PDF's ruined Christmas!

The PDF's got me hyped to the point that I turned from a sceptic to a raving fanboi. The slow drip of WOTC info was not working for me at all. It was switching me off. I was going to wait till the edition war dust settled but have now pre-ordered.

It leaked. WOTC have handled it, from the forbes article it looks like they have determined who is responsible. Lets get over it.

That would be illegal. Not only would WotC get sued, but the people directly involved in something like that would probably go to jail.

Correct. Bad, bad idea. Just like the rootkit/copy-protection crap that Sony BMG tried pulling back in 2005 with their CDs.

While, I feel that downloading the PDF is wrong, I'm not so far on that side that I would wish anyone harm (whether physical, legal, financial or technological) over a game.

Unfortunately there are some folks who would (which is why I was a little sensitive about your suggestion). Just a few days ago there was a story about Media Sentry (a company the RIAA hires to track down copyright infringers) launching a denial of service attack against Revision3, an internet television network which uses bittorrent to distribute it's own shows. Media Sentry claims it was a mistake, but . . .

What possible reason would they have to keep it secret?

It looks very bad if a company admits they got a thief inside (literally or figurately), to say so. It's about company looks and shareholders. I could try to explain, but I'm afraid I lack English vocabulary to do so, but think how many companies admit they were the victims of a robbery. Close to zero. It's just a negative impact on the image of the company (and they are the victims).

Four random people at the forum think it's possible. Looking at it coldly and calmy, it's silly, and nobody outside those four people at three random forums would believe it.

I have seen the torrent pdf's... a friend from a friend... could not resist the temptation. They are high quality and if you left click the files they seem to be authored by a guy called JEFF. now... the prepress manager is called JEFFerson ... anybody... so I think we should believe WOTC when they say they have located the leak... but then... they to have downloaded the torrent to inspect the file... so at that moment they were seeding their product to! haha... I'm am wondering what if this would be an contra argument if WOTC ever decided to go after the downloaders...

I am not saying now that Wotc leaked the files. Most probably they did not. I really believe so.
But of course, either way, Wotc should be denying any involvment.

Yep. And who knows what/how it really happened. Chances are we will never know (and does it really matter anyway??).

Just as a footnote/side bar/whatever, I used to work for a rather large software company (Network Admin; not programmer). Company leaked their own software so as to drive sales, increase hype, and increase their market share. It's not unheard of in that industry (and probably not in any others either).
