4th ed -- yeah, but are you actually ready to leave behind the 3rd?

It's pretty darn common to talk up what 4th edition could or should involve when and if it's ever released. Fun, fun stuff. Wacky good times.

But, honestly, for all the hopeful discussion of improvements, are you really, truly ready to let go of the current edition and embrace new material? Or are you still in the land of theory and potential?

Sorry, I'm not buyin 4e. Not now, not in a year, and (so far) not ever.

I'd be very happy to move to a theoretical 4e, if it were better. And by better I mean still a ROLE PLAYING GAME!!! I'd be eager to buy a better D&D or d20 system. I'd be thrilled to drop $100 in WotC's coffers for a new, better D&D book.

I'm not interested in a D&D boardgame nor am I interested in a D&D collectible <anything> game.

2E needed an upgrade because of severe power creep in each new supplement. 3.5 does not have those problems and it has not driven away droves of players as 2E did.

I'm quite happy with 3.5 and have no desire to change.

I don't currently feel a need to change games.

It is possible that a new edition can have lots of wonderful stuff I haven't thought of, that would make me want to switch. It is possible that they'll make it cheap and easy, so there's very low barriers to switching. Both of those would make me want to move. But if it is expensive, difficult, or really doesn't give me much that I don't already have, switching would be a harder sell.

I wasn't "ready" to leave basic D&D behind but then I played AD&D and it was fun, so I switched.

I wasn't "ready" to leave AD&D behind but then I read through and played 3.0 and it was fun so I switched.

Same with 3.5

If 4.0 is cool, maybe I'll switch.
