While I'm happy as 3.5 land (really, I think I'd be happier back in 2e nowadays), I'd still have no problem reading about the new edition. Aside from d20, my group plays a lot of Shadowrun 3e. When we heard that they were releasing a 4th edition, I kept up with what I could find out about it, so we had an idea of what we were walking into, BEFORE any of us spent our money on the game.

Boy, am I glad I did. We unanimously voted to keep SR3. :)

The same scenario applies to 3.5/3.0/d20. I'm going to keep up with rumors, and if we don't like the way things are going, then *shrug* I have more than enough d20 to keep me busy for years (or C&C, or 2e, or Conan, or Game of Thrones).

Still, I would hope that it's not going to be so miniatures-focused, but I realize that the minis are doing well, and to incorporate them further is logical. That said, I remember when we didn't need minis to play D&D. I miss those times.

I'm one of the 'non-responsive types' for this poll, 'cause I didn't see what i feel. I'd need to see what 4e looked like before jumping ship. But if you mean "would you jump if you liked the look of the new waters?", then by all means yes. But if I didn't like the waters, I could see sticking with 3.5. (or C&C :D )

The current edition still has about 20 years of life, minimum, left in it. Probably 50. There is no need to change the machine until the physical products literally fall apart.

Boycotting 4th Edition

I've been playing D&D for 30 years. I have my own campaign world which has been evolving over the last 27 years. I've converted for the last time. In fact, I'm still converting stuff to 3.5. I'll continue to buy 3.5 publishings, but I've had it with the business. I'm going to finally develop the software I want to run the game, flesh out the rest of the main continent where my campaigns are run and extend my house rules to fit 3.5 into my world. WotC or whoever publishes 4th Edition D&D won't have this DM as a customer. You see, change becomes more difficult the older you get.

I doubt I'll switch. As was said and reaffirmed earlier in this thread, I have tons of concepts ready to try. Why should I switch? If they stop making books for my current system, that means the game I play is finally stable! :D

... And I get to stop spending money on D&D and feed another vice ... er ... habit!

That's pretty much how my group sees it. We're currently happy playing Core+Complete+Psionics+PHB II+UA. Until we're not satisfied with it ... why move on? The day may come, but likely they'll be talking about 6th or 7th edition by then.

Another question should get asked. How many of those who will not be shifting to 4E will stop coming to ENWorld? I suspect most will continue at first - but this is a "current edition primary" community. There are a few "dialgos" around who stil play previous editions - but by and large the people who come will want to talk about the current edition. Will that drive anyone away longterm?

I won't be moving to 4E, but I've already migrated away from 3E (mostly -- I'll play it, I just don't run it, anymore). I'm running C&C, among other games, these days, and couldn't be happier.

2E needed an upgrade because of severe power creep in each new supplement. 3.5 does not have those problems and it has not driven away droves of players as 2E did.

No "power creep" in 3.x?? Unending feats, prestige classes and power "templates"..... I and alot like me were driven away as 3.5 came out. I play Castles & Crusades now and couldn't be happier. :)

So as to what happens with "D&D" at WOTC... well, whatever floats their boat is ok with me because it won't affect me one bit. Maybe it would help in getting people to look at other systems and realize you can play "Dungeons & Dragons" without having a "D&D" logo on the book you buy.

There has been a busted exampel here or there. But it has been reasonably constrained.
If you plotted it on the same scale as 2e you wouldn;t even see a noteworthy blip for 3X
