Too bad the attack didn't happen at night, otherwise the PC could have only found out at the very last moment when the blades were about to hit them that is was all a phantom appearance of a gruesome battle of decades past of which they now see the culmination.
Then when they see the army thunder past and are left behind panting and sweaty, do they hear a voice behind them who tell them with a grating accent "It is all their fault, and for their misgivings are going to join the damned".
Upon turning around they see a large muscular verbeeg giant barbarian with the ghost template with the light of the moon shining through him. And he starts walking in to maim the party with his huge bladed two handed halberd.
Backstory: This apparition was cast out of a barbarian clan and dishonored for pressing for war when the rest of the tribe didn;t want to fight foreigners that invaded their country. When he almost died of wounds gotten in the wild, did he hear the news of an evil forest spirit that his tribe was slaughtered to the man. He couldn't handle the grief and anger and became a vengeful spirit in death with the ability to fake a storming barbarian horde.
