D&D 5E 5e Psion+++++thread

I wonder, if strain or HP as a resource aren’t options, would you be down for using the Monk as a model? Specifically the 2024 Monk.
I'm pro monk. Specifically putting half the power into the bonus action. And the other half can be spells.
I.e.

Level 1: half caster
Choose 2 Talents, these determine your spell list, and a few other features at higher level (resist fire for Pyrokinetic)

Pyrokinetic (fire bolt, burning hands, Scorching Ray, fireball, firewall, summons elemental (fire only).
Cryokinetic (ray of frost, grease-but-ice, ...
Biokinetic (spare the dying, cure wounds,
Telepathic
Telekinetic
Ect...

Level 2: psi points equal to your Psion level, recovered on a short rest
Choose 2 Disciplines

As a bonus action, spend Psi Point(s) to...
Increase a spell level.
Cast a cantrip
Next spell doesn't affect allies
Grant THP
Forced movement
Misty Step
Telepathy
Any other stuff in the UA.

Level 3: subclass
Gives you more spells (not overlapping with Talent). And passive boosts.

Number and breadth. Spellcasters are still quite capable of being generically strong with only a relatively limited number of spells, and now that 5.5e is out, Wizards literally are Batman Wizards where they need only an hour to have any spell they know ready to use.
That rule will never see the light of day in my game. Choices should matter.

I like it

That's not entirely true. In the Expanded Psionics Handbook of 3.5, there was something like 42 powers that were just psionic versions of spells.

EDIT: If I've quoted that before, I apologize. I didn't realize this post wasn't recent.
I would say the core of the objection ("Psionics should not be merely reflavored spells") is still valid.

Some psionic abilities will necessarily at least resemble some spells, because spells are aggressively pushed as a design element in 5e. But we can put in effort to keep them distinct.

I have no doubt that that is the case, but as was said by another, that ship has sailed. 5e was two steps forward, two steps back in many ways relative to 3e, and 5.5e has not really changed that pattern so much as doubled down on it, four steps forward and four steps back.

LOL We may never have agreed more! :P
