I'm not surprised that Perception is getting crushed right now. I hate that proficiency so much. I don't know if other DMs have experienced this, but I've had players that constantly beg me to let them use it for everything... literally everything. I've even had one player try to use it for Athletics when climbing, carefully wording their action (with a straight face) that they are "carefully observing the wall for handholds and footholds." Come on, man.

Nine years of that and of course you're gonna want to burn it down.

Yeah, that's a bit of a stretch.

I could have possibly been convinced to allow a Wisdom-based Athletics check as a compromise.

(In contrast, I don't think Strength-based Perception would fit. That's something I would use to perceive that something doesn't feel quite right while physically interacting with it.)
