As a customer and a publisher, I've always been happy to give my pdf business to RPGNow.

I have no idea how many pdfs I've bought over the past couple of years, but I know it's a lot and I look forward to buying many more.

Worst of all, some publisher just can't keep this "first completely professional" assumption out of their system :(

I can't understand where the "completely professional" idea comes from.

Professional to me means - Engaging in a given activity as a source of livelihood or as a career.

Is it because the people behind DriveThruRPG are in engaged in PDF publishing as their only career? Can't be as we know they already work for White Wolf in other capacities. RPGNow is a source of livelihood to it's owner, it might not be his only income be then it isn't for the owners of DriveThruRPG.

Is it because the companies on the site are owned by people who engage in RPG publishing as their only carrer? Well that's not true either, GDW went out of business ages ago, so I imagine the authors behind their stuff have moved onto other things and aren't living off their DriveThruRPG PDF sales alone. Mike Pondsmith of R.Talsorian moved to Microsoft ages ago as well so he isn't living of his RPG sales alone.

I'm curious as to under what deals a lot of the works on that sight were originally published as well, we never got the Dungeon CDrom and Dragon CDrom went off sale pretty quick due to electronic publishing rights not being in the contracts (not something you thought of in those days). Are the original authors/artists seeing any of the money from these sales? I imagine its not a problem for most D20 publishers as its something they would have thought of. But I thought that back in the day, most publishers didn't by all the rights to works just the rights for that particular version (particularly artwork). So could DriveThruRPG be seeing problems from old writers/artists for the digital versions of OOP products they are selling.

To let you know, I originally had that language in my press release because it was part of the standard pre-prepared release that was distributed.

In all honesty I didnt even spot the offending phrase.

But when the matter was brought to my attention, I removed that phrase. I'm not sure that it was intended as a slam, but it surely wasnt well written. And I dont have any hard feelings for James and the RPGNow guys. In fact, I have been thrilled at how well they have done. My first product was a pdf teaser so, while I am a print publisher, pdfs are dear to me.
