A bit of help with the Dragon CD-ROM archive

So, I finally broke down and ordered this. And I've gotta say, it's incredibly cool. I'm finding all sorts of treasures I'd forgotten about, and I'm giving some serious though to updating a lot of the new classes from back in the day to 3.5 rules.

But...

I'm finding that, even with the search function, I'm unable to find some articles that I remember. It's always possible, of course, that my memory is playing tricks on me. It's been 16, 17 years since I've seen some of this stuff.

In particular, I distinctly remember an article about what a community of villagers could do to make life tough for outsiders (read: PCs) who disturb them. It's not "Locals Aren't All Yokels"--that's an article about hiding high-level characters amongst the villagers. And it's not "Revenge of the Nobodies"--that's an article about political movements. I'm almost certain there was a third article along those lines, which talked about more subtle techniques, such as misleading adventurers into danger, that sort of thing. But I'll be damned if I can find it, even with a wide variety of search terms.

So, can somebody with a better memory (or better search skills) help me out? Does this article exist, or am I just blurring multiple things together in this cobwebby swiss cheese I call a mind? And if it does exist, where the heck do I find it?

Thanks.

The CHessboard Covers were in the issue number 70's and 80's - the 170's were years afterward.

You may be remembering an editorial or some such - I remember this advice, too, but it has been repeated so often all over the internet it has totally muddied my memory.

Gads! Where they THAT old? Gah.. showing my age (and my poor memory  )...

I just remember the chessboard covers series dealt a lot with politics/intrigue... so that'd be my best guess to start looking.
