A Campaign Setting for Young Beginning Players

It sounds interesting. As someone DMing for a 9 year old, and looking into stuff for games for Gen Con next year, I'd check something like that out. My answers in no way constitute a mandate or a guarantee of any sales of course. ;)

The "over 18" disappearance of course hearkens to Logan's Run, where in the novel anyone over 21 was forcibly disappeared. I think in the movie they made it 18. Your setting sounds nothing like that of otherwise.

I suspect the challenge you face of course is that there are just so many settings. Mind you, it might have some ability to break through the noise for parents, since it has a specific focus.

Thirty in the movie. Interestingly enough, wikipedia says that they're making a remake of it, scheduled to be released in 2006, which would be closer to the book. Cool.
 


Actually, in the movie version of Logan's Run, the oldest you could be was 30.

Something about casting Michael York and Jenny Agutter in the leads...
 

I like the sound of it. When I think of it I imagine a 11 year old in a large stereotypical wizards hat, another with a short bow thats obviously more like a long bow, and one with a long sword more like a greatsword. There would be countless treasures and items just left over to picked up.

Child 1 "we can't go in there, thats the captain of the guards room!"
Child 2 "But he's gone. I won't break anything."
...
 

A random thought...

To simulate the innocence of youth, you might want to introduce the mechanic of Wis checks being required before initiating certain courses of actions.

As in:

PC Kid #1: "C'mon- lets cross the ravine at this bridge and check out that grove!"

PC Kid #2: "Hmmm...I don't know...its pretty rickety"

DM: "Kid 2, roll a Wis check at DC 15"

Kid 2 fails check by 5

DM: "Kid 2, you think the bridge will hold the 2 of you, and that the apples over there look delicious..."

Hmm, that's something to think about. But the GM could easily play up potential danger with his description of the bridge.

While there are teen-oriented supplements out there, no one to my knowledge has ever done a kid/teen centric RPG.

R. Talsorian had a game called Cybergeneration where you play kids & teens (7-19). It's a spin-off on Cyberpunk so it's not necessarily a great game for youngsters... Also, Little Fears (published by Key 20 Publishing) is about playing kids. Haven't played or read it so I'm short on detials but again, although it's about kids it isn't aimed at kids.
 

I think this is a great idea. I'd buy something like this for my kids and I, assuming it was well done. Now, by the time you get it done, my kids may be too old for this plot, but you never know.
