Yep, that was the joke. After the spell is cast, they do in fact speak the same language...hence, their interlocutor smiles and gives them a vegemite sandwich.

Yep, I always thought the material component for Tongues should be a Vegemite sandwich - although the reference tends to get lost on those poor souls living north of the equator.
