The tropes on which D&D was builtby Gygax, Arneson and other members of the  "progenitor generation" are different than those of today. They were different by the mid 80s, and again in the 90s, and so on. Gygax didn't read Harry Potter or Ranger's Apprentice as a kid, or watch Stephen Universe or Adventure Time. There is no reason to expect that the appealing recognizable archetypes will remain the same, or even should.</p></blockquote><p></p>
