A couple of questions from a new DM

Victrix

First Post
I've only run a couple of games so far, which have been reasonably successfull (I think :)), and now I'm looking for some information that would be handy.

I'm starting a basic Forgotten Realms campaign, not much else to say about it.

First off, can anyone recommend their favorite set of third party class books? I was pretty underwhelmed by Wizards books, as were my players. I'd like to present these to my players as options. Preferably something that has an interesting set of classes, options, and rules that aren't extremely bizarre or out of place (which I'm sure will vary in definition from person to person ;)). None of my local shops stock these, so I'll have to special order them, or take a long trip to another town and go hunting to even look at them.

Does anyone know of an updated set of FR character sheets like these: http://www.emass-web.com/ that have the Races of Faerun stuff added?

Is there a pdf floating around somewhere that has a list of Feat chains (graphically represented with a short description maybe), including the FR stuff?

I'd like to provide my players with the mechanical stuff behind magic item creation, without spoiling them on the magic items in the DMG, is there a source for this information (SRD?) that has just the mechanical aspects of item creation, without the specific magic items, and includes the FR specifics?

And last, does anyone know of a place that has all of the FR Prestige Classes condensed into one document? We're starting fresh soon, and I'd like to present all of the potential options from the start, so they players can think about their character concepts and future options.

To be clear, my players are all rpg newbies, and none of them have access to any of the FR books (or any books outside the PHB for that matter), so I want to condense a set of useful information that I can provide for them, and then talk them through what they want to play. I'm thinking about doing emails containing an overview of Realms backstory, some details on the world as a whole, then more specific information about each geographic area. Once they've decided on some character concepts based on this info, I can provide them with some more detailed knowledge their characters would know, and begin planning out potential adventures. A digital version of the FR map would be good as well. I searched a bit, but I couldn't seem to find anything but the older 2E map.

I have access to the core books, Manual of the Planes, Psi Handbook, the FR book, Faiths and Pantheons, Monsters, Magic, and Races of Faerun, Lords of Darkness, and the Silver Marches. I also have all but one or two Dragon mags since the first 3e issue, and all but one or two Dungeon mags from the same stretch. In case it wasn't apparent, 3E made me curious enough to pick up the books, and want to run a game. I DMed a bit last year, but work intervened and we stopped playing. Now I want to restart a campaign, but based on my (brief) experiences last time, I'd like to do a bit more groundwork for my players first.

Any answers would be most appreciated!

The "Path of..." books from Fantasy Flight Games. They consist of Path of Swords, Path of Magic, Path of Shadows, and Path of Faith. All of them are very well done and all of them are reviewed on this site so you can read more about them.

I can't help you with your FR requests. I'd bet that it is too early for some of what you are asking for as RoF is so new. But, I'd be glad to recommend my favorite series of third party class books - The "Path" series from Fantasy Flight Games.

I own them all, and would say that much of the content should be adaptable for FR use. Check out the links below for full reviews. They all got pretty good ratings: 4+/5

Path of the Sword

Path of Magic

Path of Shadow

If you want a cheap way to check out some of these books,
you can buy their Mastercraft Anthology
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/dd50.html - 144 pages for only FIVE BUCKS. It has excerpts from Path Series and should be enough to get you a good feel for their stuff

Welcome and happy gaming

edit: fixed link - looks like crothian beat me to it - as usual... :p

Class Book PDF's

A few PDF's you might pick up at www.rpgnow.com:

For spellcasting characters, nothing tops the books of eldritch might (I & II, III is more of a DM book) and the book of hallowed might. These are also in print, of course.

Four color to fantasy is great if you want to sometimes gives powers instead of magic items

I noticed that you have the Psionics Handbook available. In that case you might want to check out the "Psionics Companion" and "Bits N' Nibbles" from DaemonEye Publishing. You can download both at RPGNow.com . Psionics Companion is a fix-it book for the 3e psionics system, and contains loads of new material including new prestige classes. Bits N' Nibbles is a free web download with some psionic feats, magical feats, and two new prestige classes (including one for your favorite sorcerer).

The DaemonEye home page, where you can get the first chapter of the Psionics Companion, and the "Appendix D: Psionics and Society" (which you might find VERY useful when putting psionics into your FR game) is at DaemonEye

Yes, I own the company :D

I'll third the nomination of the Path series of books, and also toss Quintessentials into the mix. It's a series of books by Mongoose Publishing, each focusing either on a specific race or class, and they're really great IMO.

Cool, that Crystal Keep stuff is excellent. Given those lists, I can just pull the added stuff out of Races and then compile the whole mess in some easily digestible format for my players.

Depending upon where you're setting your campaign, there are free downloads at the Wizards site that can help you provide background for players. The Volo's Guides are designed for players; IIRC the Volo's Guides to the North, the Dalelands, and Cormyr are available free there. Give them the link to download, or print and hand out appropriate sections.

A number of the free products there contain digital maps (yes, 2E maps, but most of them are close enough -- cartography might not be an exact science in a fantasy world, so you'd expect an adventurer's map to vary some from reality).
