What is your experience with this game. I am thinking of buying it, but don't need another book just sitting on the shelf?

Without magic and monsters, how do you keep the game fresh?
What special mechanics are set up for intrigue and politics?
Is it more than a cool book fleshing out a world so many have enjoyed reading?

How often do you play and have you been able to keep a campaign going? Feel free to share as much detail as you wish, I really want to know what it brings to the table and how you approach running and or playing it differently than you do D&D.

Haven't tried using that system, as is. I pulled out some bits from it, and added them to a d20 fantasy mix, and that was worthwhile.

It's a beautiful book, and I'm sure the deluxe edition is even better.

For intrigue and politics, there's Social Status, Reputation and Influence. Also, the classes are totally different, including such things as Noble and Spy.

It'll still largely be about how it's run, however.

I'd wait, anyway, for the game that's coming out later this year, from Green Ronin. Not too far away, in fact - AFAIK. It is free of classes and levels, which I think will help for this style of game. This is the one I will use to - finally! - run A Song of Ice and Fire.

First let me say that it's a high quality book with good art.

Now as for use, I don't even like Martin's writing or settings and wouldn't play them. I got the book because it had some very interesting and useful rules that can be backported into other d20 games.

The Armor as DR rules are good and with some tweaks to account for the different power-curve can be used in D&D. Reputation system is solid and can be easily tweaked to account for particular settings, the rules to do with politics and scheming were good too. The real gem of the system is the Wealth rules, unlike d20Modern they actually work. After comparing them to Exalted the AGoT version seems almost like a d20 version of the Exalted wealth rules.

I have an excellent campaign going on with this game right now.

The combat is kept fresh by the facts :
Armor is DR
You have VERY LITTLE Hps, but the weapon deal the same damage
PARRYING rules ! (and you had better succeed on your parry)
NO HEALING SPELLS (you still want to fight that guy ?)

Intrigue ... well, if you have read Martin's books ... just keep faithful to their spirit

My PCs are low ranking nobles and their servants affiliated to house Tyrell mostly. They will have the "pleasure" of experiencing the events of the first book directly soon.

think like Rome with the PCs as Vorenious and Pullo.

Very good book, though I'll give a look at Green Ronin's version, I don't plan on switching.

While the book is very good you also might want to wait to see what Green Ronin does since I believe they currently have the license.

Perhaps, but all indication it will not be d20-based, so I'm happy to have gotten the AGoT OGL RPG from Guardians of Order.

The Guardians of Order book is outstanding. I have (two of) the deluxe edition and it's really an unbelievable product. The authors clearly had significant respect for the setting and feel of the novels.

It's too bad that the company tanked (and that those who preordered the deluxe never got the promised hard copies of the adventure and GM screen). Ah well.

In my opinion Green Ronin has some mighty big shoes to fill. I guess we'll see.

I have only managed to play briefly online, but I really like the book. I think it did a great job of bending the d20 ruleset to fit the framework of the ASoIaF world. I would definitely like to play in a more long term campaign with the book.

I've heard a bit about these often, but never seen the details.

Do you happen to know whether it was designated as OGC so that it could be picked up and used by another publisher should they so wish?

Cheers

It's all OGC, other than images, story elements, etc. (i.e., the usual.)

There's a list of sources it drew OGC from, so some or all of it could have been from one or more of those, for all I know. That's the only detail I'm unsure of.
