A German in L.A.

If you want a "unique" California beach experience, you need to head down to Venice Beach and take a walk around (and you can get the full experience without setting foot on the sand).

On the other end of the spectrum, if the weather has been clear the view of the city from Griffith Observatory at night can be quite nice.

I went to Santa Monica yesterday, and was their basically all day. I had a small tourist map and I walked along the walk. At some point I wondered where on the map I might be and couldn't figure it out, but since I was just waling along the beach walk, it didn't matter. I eventually figured out that I started my somewhere on the map, (relatively near to the pier with the Carousel/park) but basically wandered out to "another" map - that of the Venice part of the beach - I still haven't figured out why there is a distinction being made in the two guides I had here, but who cares. it was nice, and I did get my feet in the sand (and a little in the water, too.) I couldn't miss that. In the early afternoon, I explored the 3rd Street Avenue/Boulevard/other street synonym?). Nice place, too - if I was into shopping, I would have needed more time.

A very enjoyable day. (though it appears a text message directed at me from kiznit (CM) got lost in the ether - I think I had no reception at all in Santa Monica - this might have cost me my only chance to meet a CM/ENworlder :( )

And today I visited Holiday and even got aboard one of the LACitytours buses. Didn't see any celebrities, but I got a good shot of the Hollywood sign, and that's in a way all I wanted from a visit in Hollywood. ;)

Not sure if it's too late, but I have to second the recommendation for the Getty Museum. The architecture is also incredible.

You already made a good choice going to Santa Monica. ;)

Now that it's getting cold here in Montreal, I start to miss my years in SoCal. ;)

I'm back in Germany.

This was a good recommendation. I am not much into art, but it was still interesting to see - and both architecture and the garden (or is this just a subset of architecture?) were awesome. And it was a sunny day, too.

My only mistake was missing the winter time change happened in the US this weekend, and I only noticed when I had already left the Getty and wanted to go back to the airport... If I've had noticed that earlier (like, when I was wondering when the garden tour would start or if I was the only interested one ;) ), I might have used the time to go to the beach a second time...

But then, with a book even the wait at the airport doesn't take long...

Overall, I had a great time in LA. A very good conference and a few nice and interesting places to visit!
