Hello,
I've been somewhat inspired by Rangerwickett's recent thread on real life achievements to create a list of things I want to know or skills I want to master.
I figure, the first skills I want/need are the ones that can help me be self-sufficient and increase my survival skills. There are other, more esoteric things I want to learn but seeing as the zombie-apocalypse could happen tomorrow or everyone could push the red button sooner than later I think I should start with the essentials.
So I'm making a list of things which I hope you can add to. These are skills that are handy/useful or pretty freakin vital for continued existance either alone or in a small group.
1.) First Aid and the more advanced first aid skills ambulance crews know. If anyone with more knowledge could elaborate on that, cheers.
2.) Gun safety - Gun maintenance - Marksmanship // The Netherlands have a pretty strict stance towards guns. I could join a gun club fairly easily, it's just the cost that's prohibitive.
3.) A conscious understanding of body language. Is this irradiated merchant smiling because he just made a good deal with me or is he going to violate me? Important.
4.) Close combat self defense - This one is easy for me because I've been doing Krav Maga for 6 months. And from it I've learned the most important lesson you can when facing conflict. Avoid a fight whenever possible and run away as soon as safely possible.
5.) Clothing and shoe repair.
6.) Foraging - What's safe to eat/drink and how do you prepare food you've gathered.
7.) Hunting - Same as above.
8.) The 80 uses for a news paper Eighty Uses for Old Newspaper. I read an article about a kid who could name over 140 uses but I can't find it.
9.) Navigation. How to use a compass and maps.
That's it for now. I'll add some more stuff later. Feel free to elaborate on each point as they are all quite vague.
