A Hard Question

An added tip. If you look at the acronyms OGL and SRD, you should notice that they are underlined with an odd, dotted-line. Hold your mouse pointer over them, and you should see a little definition text.

I cannot see the underlining in the default interface mode but the mouseover still works.

In my professional life I have often been called on to be "an agent of change".

What I have come to learn is that people do not oppose change, they oppose chance they have no influence over.

When Hasbro/WotC released 4.0E, I believe they made a mistake in no longer supporting 3.X.

But now that their public statement is that they will not be supporting it, those that want to continue enjoying those earlier editions will need to get supplies and new material from somewhere. Hasbro/WotC need not participate in the release of any product, but they should not stand in the way of others doing so.

I will not pretend to have the foggiest clue about the legalese of the situation, but if Hasbro/WotC tries to prevent third party sources from providing what they no longer will, many people will view them as a bunch of greedy corporate [x]s trying to destroy the hobby they enjoy.

In truth be told, they would be correct.

In all the threads talking about 4E and 3pp I've been reading over the last few times, a question occurred to me:

If the OGL is something people want, does it need D&D's participation? If it doesn't need D&D's participation, is it necessary to get angry with WotC for no longer participating?

This is a very good point, I know when I initially made the decision I would not be going to the next edition it was kind of tough for even me to swallow. I didn't get angry with WotC but did question my own resolve in this matter mostly due to the fact I had been playing the current edition of D&D since 1974. In the end it was actually much easier then I had ever expected, I don't feel the need or even desire to chime on on 4e threads because they are talking about a different game then I play (it is as simple as that). Thanks to DungeonADay.com I get my fix 5 times a day and every once in a while other publishers will release a new 3.5 product that I eagerly snatch up. I still run 8 games a month for 29 people and nothing has suffered from all of the external forces at work.

Gaming is good and life is great :)
