A very satisfying ending.

I think Lyonel Baratheon is my favorite GoT character now. How bad is Storm's End, by the way? I don't recall Game of Thrones ever visiting there, or the Fossoway holdings.

And Dunk is a good candidate for an archetypal Lawful Good character in future discussions. The pain and discomfort he felt about lying about being a knight really spoke to how it was against his code to lie, even what is, as far as everyone else is concerned, a harmless lie.

IIRC there's a scene where we see Storm's End from the outside; the castle is under seige and the siege is broken as Sir Davos on a boat gets the red woman close and her shadow assassin gets inside the castle to assassinate the lord who is maintaining the garrison, ending the siege without having to storm the castle. I forget where exactly in the sequence of the show it takes place, though.

The show runners seem a little too addicted to their little gags to fully respect the story they are telling. The crude humor is one thing -- that's a stylistic choice that I may not like but it doesn't really affect the story. But the Maekar gag at the end literally undermines the entire story. Not only has Egg not learned anything as a result of events, but now Dunk is again guilty of the same thing he was accused of that caused the Trial of Seven. There's just no reason to undermine their characters this way. The Lyonel Baratheon bits were an example of adding to the story and doing it well to flesh out a character for adaptation (and add some humor as well), but that last bit is infuriating.

Also, the "Nine Kingdoms" bit at the end just undermined Egg's character further. Not only is it not accurate in universe (more in a sec) but no Targaryen prince would make that statement. There are no separate kingdoms anymore -- just one under the Targaryens -- and a Targaryen making that statement would be tantamount to treason. There are regions, but the "Seven Kingdoms" name is a historical artifact of the kingdoms that existed prior to the Targaryen conquest. The Iron Islands (never a kingdom) were broken off from the Riverlands (prior Kingdom of the Isles and Rivers) to become a separate region, but none of the other regions (North, Vale, Reach, Dorne, etc) are kingdoms any more. The Crownlands are a royal demesne under control of the crown, not even a separate region, much like Washington D.C. in the US is a separate administrative district, not a state. Egg's statement is the equivalent of a well-educated American saying "well, actually there should be 54 stars on the flag." It's not accurate to the in- universe lore and makes a very educated (if young) character stupid.

Oh, that's right. I don't think we saw much of Storm's End other than the rocky beach and a lot of rain. (Cheaper that way, I'm sure.) I can certainly see why everyone passed on going back to party with Lyonel.

I suspect that's them trying to lay track so we can have character recur other than just Dunk and Egg. As I recall, no one from this novella appears in the next two. But now we have reason to see Egg's family again and for them to, at least initially, again be hostile toward Dunk.

Ideally, we'd see Raymun and Lyonel again as well, although neither of them can vouch for Dunk not kidnapping Egg.

GRRM is deeply involved in this show. I would be surprised if he didn't sign off on this bit. And if not, we'll be hearing about it on LiveJournal soon enough.
