So I tried to get into this show the other day, as someone who at least still acknowledges the quality of seasons 1-4 of Game of Thrones.

I do not understand the appeal. At all. I dropped it 15 minutes into the first episode and I do not intend to go back.

Yeah, and someone who would say that of a person that was wearing armor and the sword was thrown without examining the patient isn't a medical doctor I'd want working on me, if we're taking it as more than entertainment.

Having watched the video, and being a doctor, I’d certainly be quite perplexed how Dunk survived that. It looked as if a sharp broad (5cm wide?) object entered the flesh of his inner thigh exactly where his femoral artery (which in humans is quite superficial, usually less than 2cm below the surface of the skin) sits.

Now I don’t know how mail works, but assuming it acts basically as a tough thick cloth that can’t be easily penetrated by sharp objects but can be (as with his lance wound) then it would be surprising that the sword managed to stick unsupported in Dunk’s thigh without penetrating it and the cloth and flesh underneath. In that case, Dunk is extremely lucky not to have a cut femoral artery and be dead in a few minutes at best.

Now, it does seem likely from the video that his artery was not penetrated since he’s not obviously losing a lot of blood (and he’s still alive an hour later) so honestly the most likely theory is that humans in Westeros keep their femoral arteries elsewhere.

The fact that Dunk's wounds should have killed him is just evidence that this was all an RPG session.

I assume he immediately got a long rest.
