You're reframing things back to your original premise when I've already stated that the point of the technique is wholly unrelated to your premise. You might as well ask how deciding to play baseball after you've played basketball rather than going inside and watching TV is "delivering a sense of loss". Beyond that, most times, "Failing Forward" or "Success with Complications" delivers a piece of adversity that is either equal to or greater than the potential danger/advsersity derived from a straight causal interpretation of the resolved task. 1) Straight Causal Logic in Exploratory Play - Indy fails his Perception and does not locate the trap door in the floor leading to the chamber with the talisman or etching stone. He moves on and explores elsewhere. 2) Failing Forward - Indy fails his Perception check and falls through the weak floorboards into the chamber below with the talisman or etching stone. Torch went out in the fall. The floor is moving underneath him? <Lights tendertwig> SNAKES! HE HATES SNAKES! or 3) Success with Complications - Indy passes his Perception check and locates the trap door in the floor leading to the chamber with the talisman or etching stone. He opens it slowly...2 men with swastika-adorned jackets are performing an etching of the stone which will reveal to them the location of the Relic of Plot Device. The player thinks aloud > "How did the Nazies get here first!? Do they have Dad's book!" > DM takes queue...well of course they do! > player thinks aloud "Does that mean they have Dad?" > DM takes queue...well of course they do! Now you have new content emerging from both of those resolved tasks (failure and success); neither of which are predicated upon "loss aversion." In fact, both have more precarious, immediate circumstances and thematic content adverse to the machinations of the character than they would have otherwise!
