If carrying loot is not causing you to suffer encumberance, you need better adventures. Sure, in an emergency you drop the gold first and the diamonds last, but if there isn't an emergency, having both gold and diamonds is nice.

Heh...our Dwarf wept when taking gold ingots out of his pack to replace with Platinum. He was on the verge of leaving his axe behind.

Hmmmm...PC concept: Dwarf who takes feats allowing him to be effective with improvised weapons...and carries nothing except ingots of precious metals.

Sometimes the most valuable loot requires nothing but the matter between your ears to carry it - or, if there's a lot of it, a USB data stick.
