A man of few words

Beyond the obvious need for the Feat Silent Spell, how would you design a PC who has taken a vow of silence (none exists in the BoED- OOPS!) or is otherwise mute and has at least some spellcasting ability? Arcane or Divine ideas are fine.

Well, a Warlock's Invocations only have a somatic component...

If I were to design a Vow of Silence feat, it would give the user the benefit of Silent Spell for all his spells, for free.

I mean, Vow feats already require a prerequisite and not being able to speak is a big disadvantage.

I wouldn't. For an NPC, it's fine, but for a PC, not being able to communicate easily with the other PCs is disruptive to the game.

Not unless the player makes it a disruption. I'm playing a character in a Mutants & Masterminds game that's mute, and it's actually quite a fun quirk to play- I like character challenges, as long as they don't make the character useless to play. It's interesting to try and get messages across to other characters without talking.

As I continue to mull this over, I've found Sudden Silent also helps...as does being a Sorcerer.

I also found a potential loophole...Bardic spells all require a "verbal" component (which cannot be done away with)...but it can be musical instead of truly verbal! So it seems I could play a music virtuoso and not worry about being mute.

While we're at it...I have read mention in other threads about something called "Flaws." Where are Flaws published, how do they work and is there any Flaw that could be used for this PC?

Flaws are in Unearthed Arcana

Hey! I just ran across this thread, to my delight. I've been thinking about how to play a mute character and I'm glad to see that others have tried it and found it workable. I was considering a sorcerer who could use 'prestidigitation' to facilitate communication. I don't see why that couldn't be used to write in mid-air, under the right circumstances. :D
