DAY 27
The Gang had just finished defeating the Werewolf Pack Leader. They were now negotiating for two werewolves to work as servants at Bildrath’s Mercantile in Barovia Village. These creatures would replace Parriwimple (Parri), the current servant. Parri was the prophesied Ally in Madame Eva’s Divination.
While the rest of the Gang negotiated, Moss considered the Gang’s options: They were invited to dinner with Strahd in two days. They could potentially squeeze something in before that. Perhaps return to the Amber Temple? Unlike before, they would have Kasimir the Dusk Elf Mage NPC with them. His spell could provide protection from those fireballs. Perhaps Berez? One of the winery’s missing Gems was supposedly smuggled there and now in the possession of Baba Lysaga, whoever she was. They could rescue it, but what would he gain by doing that?
These thoughts, although reasonable and worth considering, made the DM sweat a bit because he was little prepared for those contingencies at that moment. With some nudging, Moss decided to focus on the dinner with Strahd.
Emil, the new Werewolf Leader, complied with the Gang’s request for servants but warned that a werewolf’s darker urges could prove disastrous if they stayed in civilization for too long. The Gang decided that 24 hours would be safe. They told Bob and Daryl the Werewolves to meet with them in two days outside of the Village of Barovia. They would be having dinner with Strahd on that evening and believed that Parri’s presence would be beneficial.
----------
Meanwhile… somewhere on the Material Plane, Blalach was working midnight guard duty in the town of Threshold situated in the northern part of the Duchy of Karameikos. The Traladaran was barely keeping his eyes open when…
…blink…
He found himself …there… again. Armed with magical flail and long bow.
‘In Barovia again and it’s never good in this miserable land,’ he thought while looking down. He was waist deep in werewolf carcasses.
For the past several weeks, Blalach has been transported from his home world of Mystara to the Dread Domain of Barovia. The duration of these stays lasted from a few hours to a few days. Again, just like before, there were those same six fools.
“BLALACH!” The Gang cheered.
DAY 28
The next day they traveled to their home base, the Wizard of Wines. Davian gave them a rundown of Castle Ravenloft:
- Ravenloft is a confusing maze. Mapping recommended.
- Vampire Spawn, Zombies, and Ghouls wander the courtyards.
- Treasure is casually scattered throughout the castle
- Strahd has a Dragon’s Hoard size treasure hidden in an Adamantine Vault. Somewhere in the upper floors. Impossible to open without a password.
His information was based on Raven Spies and past reports from adventurers. The Gang also received the “Walls of Ravenloft” map (CoS page 53). This map represented a compilation of all the Wereraven faction’s knowledge of Ravenloft. Mamol the Dwarf checked his parchment and ink supply then decided that he would map out the Castle’s interior.
The Gang left the Winery that day and trekked across Barovia to the Village of Barovia. Their journey was interrupted by four Wights. Elyrion’s Sun Sword combined with Mamol’s Ravenkind Symbol bathed the area in sunlight. The Wights were weakened by the sunlight and were soundly defeated.
They spent the night at Ismark’s place when they arrived in Barovia Village.
Day 29, Early Morning
The next morning, they exchanged Parri for the two werewolves, they wasted several hours doing nothing, then traveled to the crossroads where the Black Carriage awaited them.
Day 29, Late Afternoon
The eight of them piled into the huge Black Carriage drawn by six jet black draft horses.
Day 29, Late Afternoon/Early Evening
The horses pounded along the long drawbridge. The weather went from oppressive grey to ominous black as lightning ripped across the sky and the downpour hit. After passing through the opened portcullis, the carriage turned to the left, then came to an abrupt halt. The carriage’s right door opened on its own accord.
K1 Front Courtyard
Through the carriage door opening, they could see the front of Ravenloft Castle and its hundred-foot-tall curtain walls. The castle itself was slightly taller than these walls. Three towers rose up from the middle of the castle another hundred feet or so.
Covered sconces were scattered along the interior curtain walls. The low light revealed several handfuls of shadowy humanoids shambling in the pouring rain as the Gang exited the carriage. The tall Entry Doors were open, and the silhouette of Cyrus Belview could be seen beckoning the Gang. Above the entrance doors were large broken stained-glass windows. An emaciated man spider-crawled across the stained-glass window, then crawled up the castle wall and disappeared over onto the embattlements.
The Gang crossed the courtyard and greeted Cyrus.
K7 Entry
They passed through the entry hall with Cyrus in the lead. Glancing up, they noticed that the four red dragon wyrmlings were still there, frozen like statues, and glaring down at them. The muffled sound of an organ could be heard. The Entry Doors closed behind them and the double doors ahead to the east opened just like before. The music of the organ was much clearer now, Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The dust covered floor still had their tracks from their previous visit.
K8 Great Entry
This octagon shaped room was twice the size of the previous room. Eight gargoyle statues perched near the ceiling peered down at them. To the west was a third set of double doors. A twenty-foot-wide grand staircase led upward to the north, then turned west. To the south was a twenty-foot-wide hall. A wheeled catering cart was seen, its contents were hidden by a large metal cloche, but the hearty smell of a feast could be detected from the steam escaping in the cold fetid air. Rahadin, Strahd’s Dusk Elf Chamberlain, stood next to the cart, arms crossed and waiting. The music grew louder as they moved to the south.
“My master awaits.” The distant perpetual sounds of the dying still surrounded the Dusk Elf.
K9 The Guests’ Hall
This hall was thirty feet long and twenty feet wide. A fourth pair of double doors, Strahd loves his double doors, stood to the west. A spiral stairway to the west led up and down. To the south was a stone mannequin dressed in full plate armor.
Rahadin didn’t waste time on niceties; he turned to the west doors and opened them.
“My master, your guests have arrived.” He bowed and gave room for the Gang to enter. Without further comment, he turned to the east and went down the spiral stairs. The screams of the dying following him.
K10 The Dining Hall
At the center of the far west wall, between floor-to-ceiling mirrors, stood a massive organ. Its pipes blared Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Seated before it, facing away from the Gang, Escher pounded the keys and foot pedals.
Anastrasya the Red, Ludmilla the White, and Volenta the Masked sat along the sides of a long table covered by a clean white satin cloth. Open places were set for each of the Gang with fine-china, silverware, and a crystal goblet filled with an amber liquid. Strahd stood at the head of the table facing the Gang, his arms outstretched in a welcoming gesture.
“Welcome to Castle Ravenloft.”
His chin turned slightly to the left then he spoke to Escher behind him.
“That’s enough of you.” The organ stopped, offkey and ugly. “Go up to the lounge and do not leave under any circumstances.” Escher stood and walked towards the only exit, the open doorway where the PCs were standing.
“Dead vamp walking” Volenta quipped. This added to the otherwise unspoken awkwardness of the whole situation. Escher exited up the spiral stairs to the east.
The dinner provided by Cyrus Belview tasted as good as it smelt. On the other hand, the dinner event was cold and tasteless. Ludmilla spent most of her time glaring at Elyrion. Her sun-scorched face still bearing the markings of their previous encounter at Tsolenka Pass.
All the female consorts’ attitudes had evolved from their first meeting. Before, they had contempt for the party. Now, they had resentment.
The source of Volenta’s resentment would be revealed over the course of the dinner. There was much discussion about her bakery recently being burnt down and her senior baker murdered by highwaymen on the same day. What bad luck. Apparently, she was closely connected to the Old Windmill, the Hag Coven, and Dream Cakes.
Near the end of the dinner, Strahd told the Gang that the Pact would be ending tomorrow morning when the Black Carriage carries away from Castle Ravenloft. But tonight, Cyrus would provide a tour of the castle’s three levels.
“Cyrus… fetch a pig and deliver it to Escher when your done with the tour.”
“yeshh masher. Bring the pig I will. Come along adentshurershs. Firsht I’ll shhow you where you’ll bed tonight. Then we take the tour.”
Cyrus led the Gang back through K9, K8, K7, and continued out into the driving rain of the front courtyard (K1).
K1 The Front Courtyard
The shadowy figures still lurked but kept their distance from the Gang as they went north and then east to the center court gate.
K2 Center Court Gate
Up ahead was a tall curtain wall that bisected the northern half of the keep. In the center of the curtain wall was a twenty-foot-tall portcullis. The gate was big enough to fit the Black Carriage with room to spare, judging from the tracks, it passed through there occasionally.
“shufferin’ shucatash.” The gate opened in response. “We’ll get the pig later, firsht I’ll shhow you where you’ll shleep tonight.” They waited for the gate to open completely, then passed through.
K5 The Servants’ Courtyard
This courtyard northeast of the keep was enclosed by towering walls. A stone carriage house with hinged wooden doors stood in the corner where the outer walls met. Next to it was an enclosed pigs’ sty. Across from the carriage house, a slender wooden door reinforced with iron bands led into the keep. Dim shapes could be seen through the dirt caked window next to the door, including two guards with large weapons to the left. Cyrus shouldered through the door and went in, his lantern raised to see better.
K23. Servants' Entrance
Everything in this room was covered with dust, including a large, heavy table in the center of the floor. A thick book lay open on a desk, with an inkwell and a quill next to it. There was a broken door in the north wall, and a staircase in the south wall plunged into darkness. On each side of the staircase, a skeletal figure draped in gleaming chain mail stood sagging at attention, holding a rusty halberd.
“A bit of my handy work.” On closer inspection the “guards” were just old skeletons, armor, and weapons wired together. Now that they were out of the rain, they all took a breather.
“You know… your dragonborn friendsh shkull would look great in my bone diorama. Hey Dwarf, how mush for the dragonbornsh shkull?”
“How much you got?”
“uh… I’ll get back to you on that.” Cyrus realized that he was out of his depth haggling with a Dwarf.
“Say, Cyrus… can you show us this Bone Diorama?” Grant was getting curious.
Cyrus was proud to show off his life’s work. “Firsht we check out your shleeping quartersh, then we check out my Bone Diorama. Follow me.” He led them north, kicking open the remains of the door.
K24 The Servants’ Quarters
Broken furniture and torn cloth were strewn about this twenty-by-forty-foot room. Dim light came from a pair of dirt-caked windows in the northeast corner. A narrow staircase with no railing ascended along the north wall.
“It’ll be shafer if you shleep upshtairs. The ghoulsh will shmell your blood if you shleep down here. They do love their blood, yesh they do.” Cyrus had a wistful distant look in his eye, as if fondly recalling something. “Follow me…” He led them up the stairs.
K34 Servants' Upper Floor
More dirty windows allowed little light to enter this upstairs room. Broken bed frames and torn bits of mattress littered the floors. A tall, dusty wardrobe roughly shaped like a coffin, its black doors painted with fey creatures, stood between two cracked, full-length mirrors that hung on the south wall.
Grant opened the wardrobe doors. A plain white dress, yellowed with age, flew out of the wardrobe and began to dance in the middle of the room. The dress flapped around to the music of the storm. Some of the Gang were amused.
“Welp, thish ish where you’ll shleep tonight. You might want to clear a shpace for your shleeping rolls.” The Gang cleared spaces where they’d sleep that night. The dress continued to dance.
“Now for the Bone Diorama. Itsh in the shublevel known as the Lardersh of Ill Omen. Not shure how it got the name, but here we are. Follow me…” The dress continued to dance.
They left down the stairs.
They continued through K24 and down the stairs in K23. The stairs went down forty feet to the sublevel.
K62 Servants' Hall
Exiting south down the stairs, they turned right and saw the Servants’ Hall. The twenty-foot-wide hall extended seventy feet to double doors on the west end. The walls’ heavy beams supported a sagging, ten-foot-high ceiling. Fog clung to the floor, obscuring everything that lay less than three feet above it. Set into the north wall were three doors and the southern wall contained one door.
Looking to their left (east) they saw arched frames of stone that formed a low, wet ceiling over the wine cellar. Great casks lined the walls; their bands were rusting and their contents had long since spilled onto the floor. A few hungry rats made their home there, but upon their sudden arrival, they retreated to the shadows.
Cyrus hurried down the hall. Sleeps, Mamol, Grant, and Elyrion felt a dark sense of foreboding emanating from behind the double doors as they got closer. Moss felt a sense of empowerment warming his evil bones. Blalach felt a little gassy.
Cyrus pushed the doors open and turned to face the Gang with a sense of triumph
“ta-dah!” His arms were spread wide.
K67 Hall of Bones
Dark stains covered the floor of this area. Large oak tables, scarred and beaten, laid scattered like toys about the room, their wood crushed and splintered. Replacing them were furnishings made entirely of human bones.
The walls and the twenty-foot-high vaulted ceiling had a sickly yellow hue, not due to faded or timeworn plaster but because they were adorned with bones and skulls arranged in a morbidly decorative manner, which gave the room a cathedral-like quality. Four enormous mounds of bones occupied the corners of this ossuary, while garlands of skulls stretched from these mounds to a chandelier of bones that hung from the ceiling above a long table constructed from bones in the center of the room. Ten chairs made of bones and festooned with decorative skulls surrounded the table, atop which rested an ornate, bowl-shaped vessel crafted from yet more bones.
The doors to the north and south were sheathed in bone, but the steel-banded double doors in the center of the east wall were not. Cyrus closed the double doors and gestured to a mounted skull of a dragon above them.
Cyrus admired Smugly’s skull once again. “Yep, your shkull would go right here on thish bad boy.” He slapped the double doors like a used car. “In fact, all your shkulls would look great here.” He was daydreaming of the possibilities.
“Do you think you can take my skull?” Elyrion was getting annoyed with this sadistic little jerk. His rhetorical question subdued the Mongrelman’s enthusiasm.
YOU. A deeply resonant voice spoke to Elyrion telepathically. YOU ARE TOTES KEWL AND HAVE A GOOD SOUL. It came from the Dragon’s skull. RELEASE ME FROM THIS DESECRATED FILTH AND BRING MY SKULL TO THE MAUSOLEUM NEAR ARGYNVOSTHOLT. I WILL BE A BEACON OF HOPE FOR ALL WHO ARE GOOD AND TOTES KEWL.
Elyrion got a closer look at the large Dragon’s skull. It was fractured into six pieces, but someone had expertly wired the six pieces together. ‘We’ll have to come back for this.’
The Gang had their fill of Cyrus’ Bone Diorama and left. Cyrus led them back to K62, upstairs, K23, and out into the rain of the servants’ courtyard (K5).
K5 The Servants’ Courtyard
In the northeast quadrant of keep with the enclosed pig sty, Cyrus leashed the pig for Escher. Thordin Lightfoot, the former halfling paladin now turned halfling zombie, had to be shooed away. Cyrus led the Gang back into the castle for the tour: K2, K1, K7, and K8.
K8 Great Entry
This is the large octagon shaped room. Stairs to the north. Hall to the south. Double doors to the west. Cyrus with the leashed pig led them through the double doors.
>>>>>THE TOUR<<<<<
K14 Hall of Faith
Twenty by seventy-foot hall. Life-size statues lined the hall on both sides. Another set of double doors on the east end. Dust and cobwebs everywhere.
When Cyrus got to the eastern doors, he halted. “I don’t really like thish room. I’m going to let you guysh go ahead. Theersh the Chapel. I’m just gonna shtay here with the pig.” He gestured towards the doors.
K15 The Chapel
Dim, colored light filtered through tall, broken, and boarded-up windows of stained glass, illuminating the ancient chapel of Ravenloft. A few bats fluttered about near the top of the ninety-foot-high domed ceiling. Benches coated with centuries of dust lay about the floor in jumbled disarray.
Beyond this debris, lit by a piercing shaft of light, an altar stood upon a stone platform. The sides of the altar were carved with bas-reliefs of angelic figures entwined with grape vines. The light from above fell directly onto a silver statuette. A cloaked figure was draped over the altar, and a black mace lay on the floor near its feet. A balcony ran the length of the west wall, fifty feet above the floor.
The Gang was immediately intrigued by the statuette. Moss ambitiously stepped forward. It was a 12-inch-tall statuette made of the purest silver, depicting a cleric kneeling in supplication. Moss put his hand on the statuette.
A blast of searing white light coursed through his nervous system like electricity. Moss’ smoking body dropped to the floor. It smelled like hot dogs.
Mamol rushed forward to heal him. Moss awoke. The rest of the Gang looked at each other. Who would be next?
Sleeps stepped forward and put his hand on the statue. He was surrounded by a protective bubble of light blue energy. Sleeps called for an immediate Harper Huddle. A Harper Huddle is when all the Harpers in the Gang gather and talk crap about another PC. The Harpers side eyed Moss.
“Huh. Why would the statue kill you but protect me? Never mind. Let’s get going.”
Blalach claimed the mace. It was a Mace of Terror (see DMG).
That was it for the Main Floor. Cyrus and his pig led the Gang back to the spiral stairs near the Dining Hall. Their path went like this: K15, K14, K8, K9, then the stairs (K21).
K21 South Tower Stair
Fluttering torches in iron sconces illuminated this spiral staircase. A chill wind rushed down the circling stairway, seeming to kill the very heat of the torches. They went up the stairs to the second floor, also known as the Court of the Count. They arrived at the second-floor landing where there was a door. The spiral stairs continued up.
K30 King's Accountant
Dusty scrolls and books lined the walls of this room. More scrolls and books lay scattered on the floor, around four heavy wooden chests fitted with sturdy iron locks. The only unobstructed floor space was directly in front of the doors on the east and west walls.
In the center of this clutter stood a great black desk. A figure crouched atop a tall stool, scratching on a seemingly endless scroll of paper with a dry quill pen. Nearby, a tasseled rope hung from a hole in the ceiling.
“Thatsh the accountant, Lief. Probably want to leave him alone. Heesh a grumpy ash hole”
Lief glanced up, then returned to his scribbling. They went through the door to the west.
K25 Audience Hall
Dim light from the courtyard fell into this great hall through the broken glass and iron latticework of a large window in the west wall. This immense room had empty iron sconces dotting the walls. Hundreds of dust-laden cobwebs draped the hall, hiding the ceiling from view. Directly across from the window stood a set of double doors in the east wall. Staircases at both ends of the north wall led down. Farther south, the Gang entered through a single door in the east wall. At the far southern end of the hall near the Gang, a large wooden throne stood atop a marble dais. The high-backed throne faced south, away from most of the room.
“I think Shtradsh dad hung out here. Back before my time.” They went to the double doors leading east.
K26 Guards' Post
The doors opened to reveal another set of double doors ten feet ahead. Between these doors, a ten-foot-wide corridor stretched north to south.
They went through the double doors to the east.
K27 King's Hall
This twenty-foot-high hall had a dark, vaulted ceiling draped with cobwebs. It was twenty feet wide and seventy feet long. Double doors were at the east end.
K28 King's Balcony
A sculpted stone railing enclosed this long balcony, which overlooked Ravenloft's chapel (K15) fifty feet below. Two ornate thrones stood side by side in the center of the balcony, covered with dust and strung with cobwebs. The thrones faced away from the double doors that gave access to the balcony.
“Thatsh it for the Court of the Count. Lesh head up to the third floor, the roomsh of weeping.”
They backtracked through K27, K26, K25, K30 and went up the south tower stair (K21).
K35 Hallway
A door of delicately engraved steel stood at the west end of this short, dark hallway. Intricate details stood out clearly on the door's surface. The door seemed to shine with a light of its own, untouched by time. Flanking the door were two alcoves in shadow.
Cyrus opened the west door.
K36 Dining Hall of the Count
Dust assaulted their lungs. A sweet yet pungent smell of decay filled the room, in the center of which stood a long oak table. A blanket of dust covered the tabletop and its fine china and silverware. In the center of the table, a large, tiered cake leaned heavily to one side. The once white frosting had turned green with age. Cobwebs hung like dusty lace down every side of the cake. A single doll figure of a well-dressed woman adorned the crest of the cake. Suspended above was a web-shrouded chandelier of forged iron. An arched window in the south wall was draped with heavy curtains. Resting in a wooden stand by the window was a dusty lute, and standing quietly in the southwest corner was a tall harp shrouded in cobwebs.
Elyrion attempted to play the harp and failed. They poked at the cake a bit, got bored, and left through a door in the north wall.
K37 Study
A blazing hearth fire filled this room with rolling waves of red and amber light. The walls were lined with ancient books; their leather covers were well-oiled and preserved through careful use. Everything was in order here. The stone floor was concealed beneath a thick, luxurious rug. In the center of the room stood a large, low table, waxed and polished to a mirrored finish. Even the poker in its stand next to the blazing fireplace was polished. Large, overstuffed divans and couches were arranged about the room. Two chairs of burgundy-colored wood with padded leather seats and back cushions faced the hearth. A huge painting hung over the mantelpiece in a heavy, gilded frame. The rolling firelight illuminated the carefully rendered portrait. It was an exact likeness of Ireena Kolyana.
“Thatsh Tatyana, Shtrahdsh one true love.” Both Cyrus and the pig were looking up at the painting.
The books were well made and valuable. Blalach opened one and found the subject was Taymoran Heraldry. Taymora was an unknown sunken land in Mystara. Kind of like Atlantis.
“Welp. Thatsh the tour! Lesh go feed Eshher and get ush shum shut eye.”
They backtracked through K36, K35, and up the south tower stairs (K21)
K47 Portrait of Strahd
They came to a dark landing ten feet wide and twenty feet long. A cold draft of wind rushed down the spiral staircase at the north end of the east wall and whistled mournfully through the room before streaming down the stairs to the south. There was a portrait on the north wall that depicted Strahd von Zarovich before he became a vampire. Even in life, he was pale.
They took the door to the west.
K49 Lounge
As thunder shook the tower, heavy beams groaned under the weight of the ceiling. Three ornate lanterns hung by chains from these beams, each casting a dim glow. The curved west wall was fitted with three windows of leaded glass in steel latticework. A bookcase sat on the east wall between two doors. Plush, overstuffed chairs and couches were placed about the room. The fabric had faded with age, and the patterns it depicted were nearly gone. Lounging on one couch was Escher, whose attire, while elegant, was worn and faded.
“Heersh your shupper Esher.” Cyrus released the pig. Escher pounced on it and sunk his fangs into the squealing pig. Blood sprayed everywhere and it took a few minutes for the feeding to end. Escher then used Prestidigitation to clean the mess.
The Vampire Spawn subtly raised an index finger toward Mamol. COME BACK WHEN TOUR IS DONE. Escher’s voice entered Mamol’s mind. MAKE SURE THAT YOU AREN’T FOLLOWED BY ANYONE INCUDING VERMIN. I COULD BE AN ALLY TO YOUR GROUP.
End session.
