I recently restarted our campaign (4e essentials) and added 2 new players (6 total now and me as DM). But recently I got into Hirstart Molds. They are 3d molds you can make to make all your dungeons 3d and very detailed. They were an expensive investment but well worth it! If you dont know what they are, please look at: Hirst Arts Fantasy Architecture Inc. Build your own castles easily.
The reason I'm saying this is because I came up with a brilliant (in my mind) idea. I built a player house (actually built the home with a 3d model using hirstarts) and as several rewards for dungeons, I am having the players take orbs and statues that are actually 3d and in the dungeons, and these various magical items give them rewards. But the cool part about it, is that they put them in their player house and decorate it and it gives them constant buffs.
I also have housing limits, for example, your house is size 2, you can only have 3 magic items in it. This also helps them spend the gold they earn because they can buy more room attachments, like a chapel or bedrooms, that give bonuses and allow more items to be stored. This makes gold valuable again and a fun thing! And since the whole building is modular, I can just take walls out and attach more rooms as if they were meant to be there. They can also buy furniture and Im having quest givers visit them based on how nice their house it.
These bonuses aren't great but they are very helpful. For example, one is:
Daily: Any player can use their housing ring (their magical connection to their home) to gain 15 temp hitpoints.
And these can only be used by one person, the item (statue of a priest in this case) is now recharging its' energy.
What do you guys think? My camera is broke but Im getting it fixed in the next few weeks and I will post pictures of their house and the items in it so you can get an idea.
But please give me feedback, I would greatly appreciate it!!!!
Thank you.
