The Seventh Doctor (played by Sylvester McCoy on television in the 1980s) is pondering the situation as he dines with some thuggish military officers:
"He had to find out what was in the forest, calling. And he needed a clear opponent; he needed someone or something he could weigh up. White and his tedious troopers were just — just wandering monsters. Incidental to the plot. He needed a villain."
(The Seventh Doctor in “Sleepy,” Kate Orman, 1996)
I have been slowly reading through the Doctor Who novels. Ever since the classic series was cancelled in 1989 (now revived since 2005), hundreds of novels were written to continue the adventures of every one of his incarnations. There have been some other allusions to D&D, but I neglected to take a detailled note of them at the time.
