A Paladin Question

but where does it say I ALWAYS have to make a fiend evil.

SRD and MM I in the templates section. At the top the entries just state Non-good and any but at the bottom of the entries where the resultant creature qualities are listed they clearly state "Alignment: Always Evil (any)."

Of course, "official" material from Dragon covers an entire organization of non-evil fiends and non-good celestials that work together.

Besides, Rule 0 is the only *always* in the system.

I personally don't like the always good/always evil bit because it prevents a celestial from falling or a fiend from ascending. I like the notion of redemption being an option in an RPG. {Diety} knows it doesn't exist in WW. :P

exactly my thoughts on this. I don't HAVE to follow ALL the rules when it conflicts with roleplaying and theme based goals and plots. 99.9% of the time i stick core to the rules. Sometimes ya need to bend them a bit to add some flavor. In this way everyone has choice and options to explore and if something IS out of the ordinary you can bet there is a good reason for it...

I might let a NPC fiend ascend in a stroyline(or if a pc took the half-fiend template from the begnining I might be willing to work a long road to redemtion story into the game), but I sure as heck wouldn't let someone pick up a nasty template like that and keep a neutral alignment, it just screams I want my cool loot with out any of the limits too much. And that just isn't normally my style of play. Nothing wrong with it if others like that style of play, and its not necesarrily what your doing, but as a geneal rule it wouldn't work for me.

Yet another series of posts showing why every Paladin player should sit down with their DM and come up with a comprehensive code to follow before the campaign or character begins. What happened with this, anyway?

Bah, where's the fun in that? Half the ROLEPLAY fun of playing a Paladin is making those hard moral choices. If you know exactly what you are expected to do ahead of time when one of these moral dilemnas come up, then why play a Paladin?

My question would be, why play a Paladin when whatever choice you make, you may be screwed, just because your DMs vision of a Paladin is different from your own? Hard choices can still be present for a Paladin, but instead of those choices being a metagame gamble on what you think your DM wants, you have to make them based on your code and your characters personality, which is far preferable IMO.
