A poem for Gary

Death: A Tribute to Gygax
(with apologies to Borges)

Around the table, the players
Deploy their dice and figurines.
And the small world they create
Detains them, sometimes till dawn.

On this table, all manner of being:
Strength: the fighter, Dexterity:
The nimble rogue, Constitution:
The stalwart dwarf, Intelligence: the mage.

Wisdom: the wild druid and pious priest,
Charisma: the charming elf.
And dragons, demons, displacer beasts,
All haunt this hex-land of dreams.

As they foray and deliver battle,
They cannot see the artful hand
Of the player and his master
Who subdues their will and span.

But the player is likewise a figurine
(The maxim is Omar’s) in another created world
And when he makes his last save
Against the forces, which pull this world apart,

He must discard the collection
Of abilities and qualities
He once imagined was him.
And find some new self hidden behind the screen.
