A Question for 4E Players: Where to now?

I've recently moved so I'm trying to get my 4e game on to Roll20. I want to keep playing that forever, basically.

I've recently been playing in a Pathfinder game. I find the game pretty awful. It's bad in all the ways the internet says it's bad. But it's what the friends are doing, and they've been doing it a long time.

I'd like to get a 5e started, just to kick the tires and see how it is. Not sure there's enough interest to get a group going tho.

We're definitely staying with 4E.

Frankly, 5E has given me a new appreciation for how good 4E really is. This remains my favourite version of D&D from the 33 or so years I have been playing.

That said, 13th Age is also going to get a run at some point soon. That's too good a game to simply only read.

Still DM 4E now and then, but it's a lot more spaced out, and usually for request of certain adventures. I'm pretty content with that. I doubt I'll really dig in and do any huge campaigns of it for quite some time: still recovering from the end of epic

Doing a couple 13th Age games, and a Mutants and Masterminds game. Also a d20 Call of Cthulhu but I'm not really a fan of that system. I imagine we'll start up a 5E game at some point once enough books are out, and we playtested a whole bunch of stuff while playtests were a thing.

I'm hoping to try out a bunch more systems in the near future to see what sticks. Starting to think I might have to design something for myself to really capture what I want though.

Decision Tree time

It's complicated.

I've already run 5e during the playtest, and am signed up to run 5e Encounter if there's ever interest in it. From what I've seen so far, Basic/Standard 5e won't be /easy/ to run in a general sense, but it'll be easy (and a bit of nostalgic fun) for an old hand at AD&D like myself. And, I'll be supporting the line and my FLGS.

But that's as a DM, and the poll is about players, so:

IF the 5e Advanced Game is better than 4e switch to 5e.

Otherwise play 4e for as long as I can find 4e games - which I don't expect to be long with it already having languished un-supported for 2 years.

Once 4e has faded away, IF Advanced 5e proves better than 3.5, switch to 5e.

Otherwise, IF 13A has improved enough that it's better than 3.5 convert to 13A,

Otherwise go back to 3.5 or convert to Pathfinder (or try a Pathfinder 2.0 if it exists) or other d20 systems, for as long as I can find 3.5/Pathfinder/d20 games - which should be forever, because of the OGL.

But, in the unlikely case d20 disappears, finally switch to 5e.

Also, give 6e a chance if it comes out at any point in the above processes.

After my second 1-30 game of 4e came to a close a bit ago, we've decided to take 5 on another live, long-term campaign for a bit. In the interim we're playing some off and on Mouseguard, Dogs, and Dungeon World just for pulpy kicks. Running a 4e PBP and a DW PBP on here and a 13th Age game by email.

When we decide to do a long term campaign again it will either be a genre flip with Apoc World or MHRP or back to 4e. 5e has 0 ability to reproduce my 4e games. If it's up to the task, it may supplant 1e for my one off Dungeon Crawls (which I've thought about switching to RC so I guess it's competing with that too).

I've never been that exclusively devoted to any edition of D&D, so it's not really a change for me to be intending to make my next campaign something else. I imagine next time I get round to playing or running D&D it will be 4e, but that's going to be a while away. Currently I'm running Runequest (6e) and playing Edge of the Empire. Next thing I want to run is a superhero game, for which I haven't decided a system, and we'll probably be playing Tianxia.

Probably run 4e with a few house rules if a new game starts up fast, or work some more on my 4e brew.

We'll keep on with 4e for a while, but, I foresee 5e on the horizon. Maybe in a year or so. Heh. Same as every other edition change I've gone through.

My heart belongs to 13th Age but my gaming group isn't ready to leave 4e behind just yet. In the meantime we're bastardizing 4e with elements of 13A, especially Backgrounds.
