A Question of base attack

But the most important factor are actually the powers the Fighter has.
He has at least one encounter power available to him to deal double damage. The Wizard in melee does not.
Then he has his At-Will Attacks. IIRC, one of the possible ones allow him to deal his Strength damage on a miss.
This means every round he is guaranteed to damage the Wizard, and in one round, he deals significantly more.

Not to mention the fighter's daily, (triple weapon damage) which is reliable.

Any fighter will flat out own a wizard in melee, even given the same stats. Sure, the wizard might hit more often than before, but so will the fighter. The wizard wont last long.

What about extra attacks? Do classes get extra attacks as they level, or is that thrown in with the powers and abilities?

There are no built-in iterative attacks, that sort of thing is included in different powers. We've already seen some powers that allow you to attack multiple creatures.

That's only a 15% difference on a d20 roll. I think 20-25% would be a better disparity. Large enough to really make a showing but not enough to totally break the math.

This is 3e logic in a 4e world. In a 4e world, your numbers aren't as important as the powers you wield.

Even if a wizard could swing a sword as well the fighter, the fighter can deal his strength damage to a creature even if he misses. He can cleave 2 minions in two with a single swing. He can crush a single creature with a massive blow. Or he can knock back a large creature with his shield. A wizard with a sword can do none of these things.
