I remember that resistances (Like Resist Fire:5) have changed... or at least I think I read it somewhere. If someone could link the info or post it, I'd be grateful.

Perhaps you are thinking of the Resistance spell? It lists a lot of types of damage that can be effected. You can find it (among other places) in the PrRC, formerly known as the PHB lite.

Thank you, but that's not it. I could just be incorrect and thought I remembered reading it somewhere. If to the best of your knowledge basic elemental resistances have not changed then that'll pretty much answer my question. Thanks.

I don't think they've changed majorly rules wise. It is just less common for even a powerful creature to have high level of resistances, and even creatures like elementals aren't immune to their own energy type.

Okay, thanks!

They haven't changed mechanically, but they are seemingly not as common or as arbitrary as they used to be, and full-out immunity is a lot less common. Demons and Devils, for example, no longer have a seemingly random assortment of resistances.

And, Importantly, a lot of other things have turned into energy resistance. So you might see resist weapons 10, or resist poison 5.

Thanks for the info.

My reason for asking was mostly based on the dm asking me at the 4e demo if resistance still functioned the old way or not. I couldn't recall, but he said he thought it worked differently. Since the rules appendix didn't cover it we just went with the old (and evidentially correct) method. Since I'm going to try and play the demo again in a few weeks I wanted to know what was correct.

I think there was chat on this board about changing resistences from armour to a threshold (i.e. if you go over ALL damage is applied)

Armour - resistance 10, attack 15 = damage 5

threshold - resistance 10 attack 15 = damage 15

(for both, attacks below resistance do no damage)

HOWEVER this was just chat on the board and never linked to something WotC intended to do. (although I vaguely remember mention of DDM games)

maybe thats what you're remembering

That does sound a lot like it. Definitely clears things up. Thank you very much.
