STARSHIP CONSTRUCTION & CUSTOMIZATION
The default civilian starship models in this rulebook do not have any shields, weapons, or armor, and have basic engines, computers, and sensors. The excess space beyond engines, basic living quarters, and a bridge/cockpit is given over to cargo space, indicated in the equipment list by the ship's available Cargo Units.
Cargo space can be sacrificed for additional amenities or equipment, especially on military vessels. Below are some common starship customization options.
Starship construction is a technical process, and is designed for those players who enjoy ducking into the nuts and bolts of the system and tinkering. Most captains simply purchase a ship, and perhaps have the engines upgraded; however, spending time on optimizing a starship design can be very rewarding to those so inclined. This section, therefore, is detailed and sometimes complex in nature, with many inter-relating figures and components.
When designing a starship, the engineer will need to consider a whole range of factors. Every single component has its own specifications, quality, size, type, and model number; the engineer will choose a hull, command and control systems (computers, sensors, etc,), engines and power sources for both subluminal and FTL propulsion, weaponry, shields and point defences, armor, superstructure, plus scientific, medical and leisure faciities and crew accomodations. All of these things funnel down into a much more simple set of values for use in actual play.
For those GMs or players who wish to create deck plans for their vessels, one cargo unit is equal to four 5' squares (10' by 10').
