A quick question about horses.

First Post
I am planning a 3.5 Druid, and I was looking at the list of allowed animals. I wanted to have an animal companion I could ride, as to take the biggest advantage out of the "Share Spells" ability. Now, I note that if I were small, I could ride the Riding Dog, which can fight with a rider. However, Warhorses/ponies are not on the list.

Can someone with the 3.5 MM tell me if there are still warhorses/ponies, and if not, can horses still fight with a rider? Thank you!

Horses (light or heavy) and pony are both on the starting druid list. Warhorses aren't, so technically, you can't use them. (as a house rule, I'd probably allow them on the 4th level + chart...).

You could still fite with the, I don't see why not though I haven't gotten to a thorough reading of the PH yet...

Thanks for the reply...on the wizards boards, someone told me that the Ride check is harder (DC 20), but that you can fight. That's fine with me. In 3.0, both horse and person fighting on horseback was impossible.

Thank you!

3.0 MM, p. 196 & 197: "A heavy/light warhorse can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds at a Ride check (DC 10)."

Yes...my problem was trying to ride a horse, not a warhorse, and do both.

Forgive me if this is way off - I have yet to play a Druid in 3E. That being said, can't you train Animal Followers with a certain number of Tricks? I thought I saw Fight With Rider listed as a Trick either in the DMG or MotW. If not, maybe you can work with your DM to write up such a Trick.

- Hope this helps

i was starting to think the same thing as you, youspoonybard. i think a mounted druid could be cool

if the revised Monster Manual doesnt make a distinction between Riding Dogs and Riding Dogs trained for war in the stat block (as it does in the 3.0 MM), then i dont see why one couldnt take a War Pony. as it is, the Riding Dog and War Pony have basically the same stats. *shrug*

as for the "Share Spells" ability, is it still the same as it was in the old PHB? specifically, being able to share supernatural and spell-like abilities (not just spells)?

Don't see such a trick in the 3.0 DMG or MotW, but I don't think it's too unreasonable. The other idea I had was I know warbeast is a template in MM2, which I'm getting any day now. I was thinking of looking at the process, and seeing if my Druid could fulfil it.

And the Warpony is a good idea, but, once again, it's a medium creature. I'm playing a Human Druid, so I'd need a large one.

Thanks for all of the advice!

Combat riding is a "general purpose" under Handle Animal in the PHB. So your animal companion horse could be trained to do this (it specifically says warhorses and riding dogs already know this).

by the way, i answered my own question about companions and spell like abilities by going and buying the the new PHB....

none of the companions are allowed to share spell like abilities in the Share Spells ability
