D&D 5E A simple houserule for martial/caster balance.

I'm hoping that with the next campaign, we will try E9 variant for 5E.

9th level seem like a nice power level to stop vertical power growth.

casters get their single 5th level slot, 1 spell a day of 5th level should not break too much.

proficiency is just bumped to +4, this give nice spread of +0, +2, +4, +8 for various levels of proficiency.

half casters get their 3rd level spells, and subclasses that didn't get any features at level7, catch up that sub class slot at level 9.

from there on, when DM feels that you earned a "level", just gain an ASI/feat. Alternately, you can gain a level in another class(without HPs or moving towards higher prof bonus), kind of gestalting it.

@ehren37 , I have decided to take a slightly different approach for you. I will create you a 5e martial warrior class that is 100% balanced to what a wizard can do. I am a bit busy right now so I don't have time to work on it, but I should be able to get back to you with a general proof of concept in about a week. I will post that in a new thread and let you know when it is up.

EDIT: I took a quick peek at my initial concept. To keep some of the fighter flavor I need to revise my estimate and say 99% balanced with the wizard. It could be slighter stronger/weaker/different.

In all fairness, I do feel it was, "too video gamey", and it did feel like fighters were using "mind control". But, the problem it was intended to solve is still a problem. We just need another solution.
We DO have one: the Goading Attack maneuver of the Battlemaster. You just remove the bonus damage and BOOM! Marking in 5e!

There's also the Spirit Guardian Barbarian and the Knight with similar mechanics.

Arguably there's also the Armors artificer with the heavy armor and the puling beam.

and the Psi-warrior.

Given, these are mostly magical effects, but the idea is there, indeed.

Yeah, it's just unfortunate that you have such a limited pool of maneuvers. I'd happily give up the bonus damage for more maneuvers.

Something something about Martials being limited by not being allowed to have magic...oh sorry, I mutter to myself a lot.

So no Kender in your games then?
Never run a Dragonlance game. Just an ethusiast of the setting. Taunt, like all effects of this nature, needs to be adjudicated on a case by case basis. This naturally weakens it, so it should be something anyone can try, and not be a class or race feature.
