A spell specialization for sorcs and bards

Stalker0

Legend
Spell Specialization [general]
Prereq: Any metamagic feat, able to cast spells spontaneously
Benefit: Choose one spell you know. Its caster level increases by 1. Total costs of using metamagic feats on this spell are reduced by 1, and no longer requiires a full-round action to cast.
Special: 1) You can take this feat multiple times... its effects do not stack. Every time you take this feat choose another spell you can cast.
2) When a sorc or bard is eligible for spell swapping, they may change their spell specializations as well to any other spells they can cast.

It looks fine, with two notes:

- I don't think there's a real need to decrease the casting time, unless you are just trying to let Quicken work, in which case you better just rule0 that it works always, without the need of taking the feat

- I don't like 2) it just sounds lame enough that a Sorcerer "forgets" a previously known spell (I think this is the only case in the whole game of someone "forgetting" previous abilities) that it would only sound worst if you carry this feat to a swapped spell

While I agree the flavor of the mechanic's a little wonky... I think it helps sorcs use some of those low levels spells that suck later on... otherwise every sorc just becomes cookiecutter which is bad enough even with the swapping mechanic.

Likewise, this feat would become utterly worthless at higher levels unless I allowed for some way of letting it stay current.

For the casting time, I agree its not necessary, but hey it is a small benefit.

How about turning it around, such as this:

Intuitive Metamagic [MetaMagic]
Prereq: Any other metamagic feat, spontaneous casting
Benefit: Choose one metamagic feat you know. You may use that feat without lengthening the casting time and it's increase in caster level is reduced by 1 (minimum of 0). You may use this a number of times equal to the ability bonus of your casting stat, usually charisma, with a minimum of 1.
special: This feat may be taken several times. Its effects do not stack, each time it applies to a different metamagic feat

I'm sure something like this has been thought of before. Anyway you need not swap specialised spells this way.
Options: base the number of times it can be used on caster level instead, so as to decrease to incentive to munchkinize it. Or just a set number and allow stacking to increase this.

What do you think?

Oh, and would this be a 'Meta-metamagic' feat? :)

Hof.

I think your on to something hof... basically the sorc specializes more in metamagic than in just the one spell. I like your version better than mine.

good ideas; to me it seems like most sorcerers would naturally be specialists, and I can't see why wizards are the only ones who specialize in WotC material.

The "Intuitive Metamagic" feat looks closest to the mark.
